Rebuke the Devourer
The last book we mailed out was on bringing proper order into the church. Next, we must attempt to bring proper order in those who call themselves Christians. Something that is seldom taught in the church today is tithing. What is generally taught is giving - - - give to the building fund - - - give to the evangelists and missionaries - - - give to the pastor's retirement fund - - - and many other projects to get the people to give, give, give! But God's principle of tithing has gone by the way side. When discussion is made about tithing, we hear that it is part of the old law, and we are no longer under the Mosaic Law. We need to realize tithing preceded the law by hundreds of years.
When Abraham the "Father of our Faith" returned from the slaughter of the kings, he took possession of all the treasure which he had recovered. Upon Abraham's return, he met Melchisedek, the King of Salem (peace). Who was this Melchisedek? Paul revealed who Melchisedek was in his letter to the Hebrews:
"For this Melchisedek, King of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretaion King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils." Hebrews 7:1-4
There is only one who had neither father or mother, who had no beginning of days, nor end of life. There is only one who was a continual priest. This was the Incarnate Christ. This was who Abraham paid tithes to. Tithing is not giving, it is what we owe God. The prophet Malachi made this very clear:
"Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed Me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed Thee? In tithes and offerings." Malachi 3:8
When we do not tithe, we rob God of that which is His.
"Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed Me, even this whole nation." Malachi 3:9
When we rob God, we are cursed. It is not God who curses us, we curse ourselves. Malachi continues:
"Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in Mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it." Malachi 3:10
The storehouse is where you are being fed. Many support churches where they are being starved from hearing the Word. God makes a promise to those who are faithful to tithe to the storehouse. God promises to open the windows of heaven and pour them out a blessing that they cannot imagine. Then God gives us a challenge, saying, "Prove Me." He wants to prove His Word to us. Then He makes us another promise:
"And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts." Malachi 3:11
God promises to rebuke the devourer in our lives. In other words, satan will have no access to our finances or our property. We also have Jesus' words on tithing:
"Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone." Matthew 23:23
Jesus did not condemn the scribes and Pharisees for tithing. He said this they should have done. They omitted teaching judgment, mercy and faith. The church is still failing in these areas. Many of God's people wonder why they are struggling financially. Perhaps it is time they prove God and His Word. No one every failed when they lived by God's Word. Many of the most successful men who ever lived tithed above the ten percent, and God opened the windows of heaven and blessed their businesses and their personal finances. When you've tried everything else, Try God!
We are reminded of Jesus' words concerning the many events which have been unfolding in the world today:As always in Christ, George & Jeannie Kirkpatrick
"And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh." Luke 21:28
