Break Up Your Fallow Ground

“For thus saith the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.  Circumcise yourselves to the Lord, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem:  lest my fury come forth like fire, and burn that none can qench it, because of the evil of your doings.” Jeremiah 4:3-4

In Jeremiah 4:3-4 the Lord tells us to says break up our fallow ground. The word  fallow means “untilled.”  We need to look inward and ask ourselves what areas in our lives have we not tilled lately; or not at all.  When we till our ground it is to make it easier for the seeds that we plant to grow.  We must also cultivate our lives so the water of  the word may soak in deep and not just run off.  The Lord also tells us in verse 3 not to sow  among thorns.  In the book of Matthew we discover some interesting things about God's Word:

“He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the Word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the Word, and he becometh unfruitful.  But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the Word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.” Matthew 13:22-23

If we sow seed among thorns we are trying to grow spiritual things in and around the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches. When this happens our seed will not produce fruit.  We must try not to put ourselves in the position of being around the worldly influences that will choke the Word (seed or fruit) in our lives.  The only way we will produce fruit in our lives is by being in God's word, in prayer, and in fellowship with men and women of God. Luke also tells us about the seed of God's Word:

“And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.” Luke 8:14

Beloved, we need to be very careful because the cares and riches and pleasures of this world will keep us from bringing fruit to perfection. For our lives to really be able to minister to those around us our fruits of the spirit ( love, joy, peace, lonsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance, lowliness, patience, and righteousness) must be mature producing fruit.  For how can we minister if our own lives are in shambles? Paul also shares with us the sowing of God's seed in our lives:

“ Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.  For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.”   Galatians 6:7-8

We can either feed our fleshly man with sin and the ways of the world; or we can  feed our spiritual man in the ways of righteousness.  We can easily say this but we must live it.  James declares:

“For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed” James 1:22 & 25

We must be a doer of the Word not just a hearer.  So many people today go to church on Sunday, but on Monday, at work you can't tell if they are a Christian or not because their lives don't show God in them.  We must be that example of righteousness.  Isaiah tells us that God created us for His glory.

“ Even every one that is called by My name; for I have created him for My glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him." Isaiah 43:7
