God's Faithful Servants

“Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears: But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock. Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads. So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.”   I Samuel 13:19-22

In verse 19, Samuel tells us “. . . there was no smith found . . .”  throughout all the land of Israel. A smith is one who makes, shapes, and repairs metal objects, especially by shaping the metal while it is hot and soft.  The smiths for our day is the five-fold ministry.

“And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:” Ephesians 4:11-12

The five-fold ministry should be shaping and repairing the body while it is hot and soft.  But sad to say, today’s church leaders are bringing forth a people content to be in a state of lukewarmness.  The writer of Revelation warns us:

“So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of My mouth,”  Revelation 3:16.

Yes, today the church is lukewarm.  We need to ask ourselves,

”Where are the leaders who are turning up the heat to mold and shape God’s people into useable vessels?”

As we continue in I Samuel 13:20, we discover that the Israelites were going down to the Philistines to sharpen their tools.  First we see the people were going down.  When a person goes down, they are going away from God.  They are leaving the high place in Him. Verse 20 also tell us, the Israelites went down to the Philistines.  The Philistines were the enemies of God’s people. The enemy of God is the fleshly, carnal mind, and the fleshly teachings and doctrines of man.  When the Israelites went down to the Philistines to sharpen their tools, this also represents going to the hirelings who care not for God’s flock.

I Samuel 13:21 tells us they had a file to sharpen the small tools. The small tools are the first principles of the Word of God.  What a graphic example of today’s church gatherings!  The first principles are filed smooth over and over and over, Sunday after Sunday after Sunday. Beloved we are given definite direction on how to bring God’s Word forth to the people in Hebrews:

“For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat,”  Hebrews 5:12.    And again in Heb 6:1-3 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. And this will we do, if God permit.”
It is time to become faithful smiths of God.  We, as God’s leaders, must begin to put heat to the flock, molding  and shaping God’s people, so they can go beyond the first principles of the milk of the Word.  It is time to prepare God’s people for the coming days.  Who is preparing God’s flock to endure hardness for the battle? Beloved, Ezekiel declares to the leaders today:

“Ye have not gone up into the gaps, neither made up the hedge for the house of Israel to stand in the battle in the day of the LORD.”   Ezekiel 13:5

And again in I Corinthians: “For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?” I Corinthians 14:8

Be not as I Samuel 13:22 laments: in the day of battle there was neither sword nor spear found in any of the people.  What a sad pronouncement!  Today there is no Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God found in the hands of God’s people.

Beloved, there is a battle coming and it is called the Day of Wrath.  Yet many of God’s people are not being taught to prepare themselves for the Day of Battle.  Samuel reveals why this has happened: “ . . . but with Saul and with Jonathan his son were there found. . . v.22”  In many congregations, the preacher and his assistants have a Bible, but the congregations are not even encouraged to read.  These leaders tell the people, “We have been taught by the seminaries, and we will teach you what the Bible says.”  Truly, these have only given the small instruments (the first principles) - - - and a file (that which smooths over again and again the first principles of God).

God’s Word is truth.  “ Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them.” Isaiah 34:16 and again, “ Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.” Revelation 1:3

Are you desiring to become useable to God in this last hour?  “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” II Timothy 2:15.  Many times when Jesus was addressing the congregation, He would ask, “HAVE YE NEVER READ?”  When the Day of Battle comes, don’t be one of His children with no sword or spear in your hand.
