The Wall and the Plumbline

“Thus He shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in His hand.” Amos 7:7

What is this wall?  Isaiah tells us:

“What could have been done more to My vineyard, that I have not done in it? Wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes? And now go to: I will tell you what I will do to My vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down: And I will lay it waste:  it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and He looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.” Isaiah 5:4-7

First, we must ask ourselves what is the vineyard? Verse 7 tells us that the vineyard of the Lord of Hosts is the house of Israel (His people) and the men of Judah (people of praise) are His pleasant plants. We are this vineyard that He planted on a very fruitful hill.

“Now will I sing to my well-beloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard.  My well-beloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill:” Isaiah 5:1

As we look again at Isaiah 5:4, we hear God’s cry: “What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it?” What more could He have done for us? He gave us life, He gave us His word that we may grow by and produce fruit (the fruits of the Spirit) but so many who call themselves Christians are only producing stinking worthless grapes  - - - and no fruits of the Spirit.

In Isaiah 5:5, God says He is going to take away the hedge thereof and break down the wall thereof. The wall spoken of in Amos 7, and here in Isaiah 5, is a hedge or wall of protection. Only those who are living by His word and not desiring the lusts of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life will have that protective hedge about them. Let’s also look at Isaiah 26:1-3:

“In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks. Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in. Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee:  because he trusteth in thee.” Isaiah 26:1-3

Salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks. The word wall in Scripture is a symbol of salvation and protection. One of the meanings of salvation is that it is freely offered to all men, but is conditioned upon repentance and faith in Christ. So our wall of salvation and protection depends on how repentive we are and how strong our faith in Christ is.  Isaiah 26:2 encourages us to open ye the gates that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in.   We must ask ourselves what are these gates?  Let’s go to Isaiah 60:18:

“Violence shall no more be heard in thy land, wasting nor destruction within thy borders; but thou shalt call thy walls Salvation, and thy gates Praise.” Isaiah 60:18

These gates represent our praise. When we are singing or praising our God, either aloud or in our hearts, we are opening our gates that His righteousness may enter into our hearts. God is looking for a people who are praising and giving glory to Him continually.

Let’s return to Amos 7:7:   The wall the Lord stood on was made by a plumbline. He also had a plumbline in His hand.  A plumbline is straight and narrow, just like our walk in Christ should be.  In verse8 He says, I will set a plumbline in the midst of My people Israel. This plumbline is to see if our lives stand straight and true to God’s word - - - not just on Sunday, but every day in our walk with Christ. So take a good look in the mirror now before you lose your wall of protection - - -  and see if you line up. Matthew 7:13-14 tells us:

“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”Matthew 7:13-14

If you see the multitude headed in one direction that is probably the wrong way to go. God is looking for those few that will make up His kingdom, those who will walk the strait and narrow path with leads unto life. Let me leave you with this exhortation from the One who gives us eternal life:

“And I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria, and the plummet of the house of Ahab: and I will wipe Jerusalem as a man wipeth a dish, wiping it, and turning it upside down. And I will forsake the remnant of Mine inheritance, and deliver them into the hand of their enemies; and they shall become a prey and a spoil to all their enemies; Because they have done that which was evil in My sight, and have provoked Me to anger, since the day their fathers came forth out of Egypt, even unto this day.” II Kings 21:13-15

If we live a lifestyle of sin how can we expect a blessing? We must be a blessing, before we can receive a blessing.

“Come out from among them, and be separate, saith the Lord,
and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive yo

We pray the year of 2013 be a time of searching, seeking, and finding God’s purpose and plan for your life, as we know we are headed for hard times with the economy and the state of the times in which we live.  Pray with us, that the Lord of the harvest will send laborers into the field of the world and compel all to prepare their hearts and lives for the coming Day of Adversity, that lies upon the horizon.
