In Your Patience Possess Ye Your Souls

And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for My name’s sake.

And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all men for My name’s sake. But there shall not an hair of your head perish. In your patience possess ye your souls.” Luke 21:11 - 12 and 16 - 19

As we see the day approaching our patience must become stronger and stronger. The word patience means endurance, waiting, steadfastness, not swerved from His purpose or faith. We must learn to endure the trials and tribulations in our life. We must learn to wait on the Lord, steadfast, not turning to the right or left but striving to enter the straight gate. David, the Psalmist, tells us:

For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.” Psalm 37:9 - 11

If we want to be inheritors we must be meek and wait upon the Lord. The word meek means to be humbled, afflicted, lowly, and bowed down. We must humble ourselves before the Lord and not be proud and lifted up, giving our all unto Him. The writer of Hebrews tells us:

... be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. And so, after He had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.” Hebrews 6:12 and 15

Paul tells us: “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.” Romans 15:4 - 7

Today the world has no hope. The economy is failing, taxes are raising, destruction after destruction; from weather, earthquakes, mud slides, sinkholes, hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, fires, wars - - - and men's hearts failing them for fear of what is coming. We must have patience and comfort ourselves with God’s word that we may have peace and hope. John proclaims Jesus’ promises to us:

Because thou hast kept the word of My patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of My God,” Revelation 3:10-12a

If we learn to have patience now - - - then our time of temptation may be shortened. We need to learn to trust Him that no matter what trial or temptation He puts before us, we are more than conquerors through Him. We need to be overcomers - - - overcoming the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life - - - and then will He make us pillars (support, to stand immovable, stand firm, and of a steadfast mind) in His temple. John further declares:

He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.” Revelation 13:10

So many today are arming themselves for whatever may come. Our first instinct when we are threatened is to fight back, but the Word tells us, “Thou shalt not kill, Exodus 20:13.” We need to have patience and know that God is in control, and if we trust in Him He will fight our battles.

Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put Him to death; But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none, At the last came two false witnesses, And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. And the high priest arose, and said unto Him, Answerest thou nothing? What is it which these witness against thee? But Jesus held His peace.” Matthew 26:59 - 63a

And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked Him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest. And when He was accused of the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing. Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? And He answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marveled greatly.” Matthew 27:11 - 14

We must ask ourselves, could I hold my peace while others testified wrongfully against me? Jesus had so much patience, He had the power to walk out of there unharmed; but, He chose to do the will of the Father. We also must choose to do the will of the Father with patience.

Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection . . .” Hebrews 6:1

God is looking for a people who want to go on unto perfection; not being held back by our fleshly sins, our fleshly desires, our pride and anger, our fears and lusts. In order to become overcomers, we must go on unto perfection with patience, that we may inherit the promises. We must declare as Paul:

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13 - 14

Be encouraged in the Lord, brethren. In your patience, possess ye your souls!
