Power of His Christ
by George Kirkpatrick
Paul reveals the power of Christ in our lives:
"But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God." I Corinthians 1:24
Christ is the power and wisdom of God. As we search for understanding of the word CHRIST, we discover it is the Greek word CHRISTOS and means "anointed". Jesus was the Christ, (the anointed). Those who are God's anointed in the earth today are His Christs (His anointed ones). When Jesus became the anointed of the Father on the banks of the Jordan, the anointing came in the form of a dove. The Father declared,
"...This is My beloved Son in whom I am well-pleased," Matthew 3:17
This was the first time the Father declared Jesus to be His only begotten Son. The second time was on the Mount of Transfiguration. Jesus not only became the Christ on the banks of the Jordan, He was declared to be the Son of God. Paul wrote to the church at Rome:
"For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren." Romans 8:29
Jesus was the firstborn of many brethren. His brothers are those God foreknew, and who are predestined to be conformed into the image of His Son. The beloved John recorded Jesus' words concerning His Sons:
"But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name." John 1:12
As many as receive Him, He gave the power (EXOUSIA) to become the sons of God. Today many are claiming to be the Sons of God. This proclamation is based on their initial salvation, it is not based on their anointing. Many today have not been conformed into the image of God's Son, nor do they desire to be.
Paul declared Christ was the power of God. How do we begin operating in this power? To operate in God's power we must understand how we get the power. Luke recorded Jesus words to His disciples after His resurrection:
"And, behold, I send the promise of My Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high." Luke 24:49
Jesus gave His disciples instructions to tarry in Jerusalem. Jerusalem represents the true place of worship in our lives. Those who tarried in Jerusalem were empowered from on high. Those who remain in God's true place of worship will also be empowered from on high. [see "Power From On High" by George Kirkpatrick]
The Eternal Working of the Power of Christ
To understand the eternal workings of the power of Christ in our life, it becomes necessary to look at our example Jesus Christ. As was stated before, Jesus was given all power (EXOUSIA) in heaven and in earth. Jesus appeared to His disciples as they were eating, and admonished them in their belief. Then He gave them the assurance:
"And these signs shall follow them that believe; In My name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues: They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." Mark 16:17-18
These are signs that will follow those who operate in the power of Christ. Jesus stated, "In My name they shall cast out devils". Deliverance was a huge part of Jesus' ministry. Yet today deliverance in most churches is not even spoken of. By Jesus' words, deliverance is a sign we should look for among believers. By Jesus' words we must assume if there are no deliverances we are dwelling among non-believers. On the other hand we know those who have made deliverance their whole ministry. There is no balance in their ministry. Many have been maimed for life Spiritually by these who mishandle the Word of God. Deliverance should be an important part of the ministry, but not the whole ministry. When Jesus proclaimed His ministry, He quoted the prophet Isaiah:
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord." Luke 4:18-19
Jesus' ministry was well-rounded. All He did, He did by the anointing He received on the banks of the Jordan. Jesus came to preach the gospel to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance, to set free those who were held captive by the spirit of darkness, to heal man's physical and spiritual blindness, to set at liberty those who were bruised or had been wounded (generally by word of mouth), and lastly to preach the acceptable year of the Lord, "The Day of His Judgment". Jesus set the captives free wherever He went.
When Philip asked Jesus to show him the Father, Jesus asked Philip, "Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known Me," John 14:8-9. Then Jesus disclosed the source of His power:
"Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak unto you I speak not of Myself: but the Father that dwelleth in Me, He doeth the works." John 14:10
The works Jesus did in His flesh were done by the anointing that came upon Him after His water baptism. In the book of Acts, Luke recorded:
"How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with Him." Acts 10:38
When the anointing came upon Jesus, He went forth in power. He utilized this power in everything He did, every word He spoke, and every move He made. Today there are many deliverance ministries. But there can be no deliverance without the power (dunamis) anointing in our life. If we are going to do the work of the ministry, we must know where our power and authority come from. John came to Jesus and declared:
"...Master, we saw one casting out devils in Thy name, and He followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us." Mark 9:38
Here we see a non-believer using the name of Jesus to cast out devils. This reveals our authority to operate in the ministry of deliverance is in the name of Jesus. Different times when Jesus was doing deliverances, the demon would speak and say, "We know who You are," Luke 4:34. Jesus also revealed the power we need to set the captives free. Jesus declared:
"But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God is come unto you." Matthew 12:28
We have the authority in the name of Jesus. We have the power by the anointing. When we operate by the authority and power, then the spirit of darkness must obey. This power and authority was not resident in Jesus only. When Jesus sent forth His disciples to do the work of the ministry...
". . .He called His twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases." Luke 9:1
Jesus gave His disciples power (dunamis) and authority (exousia) over all devils. The disciples not only had power over all devils, they had power to cure diseases. How far the church has fallen! The church is full of those who are sick, and held captive by the spirit of darkness. When the church learns to operate in God's "exousia" and "dunamis", no power of darkness can prevail in their midst. Jesus gave His disciples the assurance:
"Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you." Luke 10:19
This same promise is made to the church today, but the church has failed to allow the Spirit of power to work in their presence. They have their planned programs and their printed bulletins. The Holy Spirit would only interrupt their well-organized service.
Jesus knew the power and authority He set in the church. He also knew that when the church begins to operate in this power and authority nothing in the satanic realm would be able to touch them. When Jesus asked His disciples who they thought He was, Peter answered, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God."
"And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but My Father which is in heaven." Matthew 16:17
The revelation of who Jesus is can only be revealed by the anointing. Jesus then made a promise:
"And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." Matthew 16:18
The church is to be built upon the words of Peter, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God". Jesus was Christ, the Anointed One, and He is the Son of God. The church needs to operate in the Christ anointing, knowing who Jesus, the Son of God, is in their midst. His life must become the church's pattern. When the church comes into this place the gates of hell will not prevail against the church. Today the gates of hell are prevailing against the church because God's power and authority have not been given place in the church.
THE ANOINTED ONES
We are to become Christ's "anointed ones", or "His Christ" in the earth. As this truth is brought forth, many begin to be offended because of a mind set that says, "We could never be like Jesus." And yet John wrote,
"Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is." I John 3:2
John asked the question, "Now are we the sons of God?" Many proclaim they have come into sonship already. But Jesus is our example of sonship. Paul wrote of Jesus, "Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature," Colossians 1:15. Jesus was the image of the invisible God. God expects us to come into this same image. In Paul's letter to the Colossians, he revealed, “Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of Him that created him." Colossians 3:9-10
We are going to become that new man when we are changed in a moment in the twinkling of an eye at the last trump, I Corinthians 15:52. John recorded this change that must take place if we are to see Him when He comes, ". . .when He shall appear, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is," I John 3:2. John proclaimed, "We will see Him because we will be as He is." Paul wrote the Corinthians of this change,
"We all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord." II Corinthians 3:18
As we begin to see Jesus as He is in the Spirit, we will begin to desire to change into the same image that is reflected in the mirror of the Word of life. John went on to inform us what we must do to bring about this change, "And every man that hath this hope in Him purifieth himself, even as He is pure," I John 3:3. He who has the hope of sonship purifieth Himself. Paul informed the churches in Galatia,
"For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus." Galatians 3:27-28
If we have been baptized (immersed in Christ), we have put on Christ. We are clothed in Christ. We are all the same in the fact that we need the anointing to purify and cleanse our lives to make us acceptable in the beloved. Paul went on, "And if ye be Christ's then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise," Galatians 3:29. If we are Christs (anointed ones), then we are Abraham's seed. Who are Abraham's seed? [see "The Seed of Abraham" by George Kirkpatrick]
"Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ." Galatians 3:16
Abraham's seed are the "In-Christed Ones" in the earth today.
And as Abraham's seed, we are heirs according to the promise, Galatians 3:29.
Matthew informs us that Jesus was not only the son of David, but He was also the son of Abraham, Matthew 1:1. Jesus was the Christ, or the seed of Abraham. Those who have been baptized into Christ are His Christs (His anointed ones) in the earth today, praise the Lord! [see "Anointed for the Greater Works Ministry" by George Kirkpatrick]
The church is called the Body of Christ. If the head is Christ, then the Body is Christ. This is not to take away from Jesus being the Christ. He was the first-fruit Christ.
"But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at His coming." I Corinthians 15:23
Those who are Christ at His coming are those spoken of by John. Those who are like Him at His coming, will see Him as He is. Paul spoke on this subject in his letter to the Corinthians,
"Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's." II Corinthians 10:7
As Jesus was Christ, the Anointed of the Father, so are we Christ, the anointed of the Son. When we set aside some our old theological thinking, it becomes clear that we, as His Body, are Christ, the Anointed Ones in the earth today. Jesus revealed this also to John on the Isle of Patmos.
"And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the Kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night." Revelation 12:10
The kingdom age is coming, and along with it will come the power of His Christ. Jesus, again, revealed this to John on the Isle of Patmos.
"And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ; and He shall reign for ever and ever." Revelation 11:15
The kingdom becomes the kingdoms of our Lord (Christ Jesus) and His Christ (the Anointed Ones) in the earth; those who have become His Christ because they have come into His image and have purified themselves even as He is pure.
When we begin to allow the Spirit of the Father to bring us into His image; and begin to listen to His voice; and begin to do as we see Him doing, we will truly see Christ Jesus as He is. The Greeks said, ". . . we would see Jesus," John 12:21. Others must see Christ Jesus in us.
“A light has gone out,
but his words continue on. . . . . . . .”
This was a precious word given to us from a brother upon the event of our beloved George's crossing the river of death to continue His journey in the Spirit.
These words are indeed continuing on into the hearts and lives of many in the body of Christ. He has taught us from the deep well-springs of God's Word, in so much as we cannot but speak from the depths of our beings the untold riches of God.
As we continue the ministry our mentor has birthed and brought to maturity in us, we cannot but speak that which is bubbling up in our innermost being.
Our calling is to bring forth the hidden truths of God's Word to the little flock, the remnant, the few, the undefiled virgin who desire to press on into the deep truths awaiting us.
Our heart's cry is to continue to put forth the light of God's Word as the Lord has commissioned us.
