Dear Body,                                          A Light That Shineth In A Dark Place                             September 1, 2009

We are living in the time spoken of by the prophet Isaiah:

"For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and His glory shall be seen upon thee." Isaiah 60:2

As we begin to understand darkness, then we can understand what Isaiah was referring to. Darkness is just the absence of light. To get further insight into this, we must look at the creation:

"And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." Genesis 1:2

We discover that darkness was upon the face of the deep. The deep in the book of Genesis is the abyss, or the grave. But the Spirit of God (the very life and energy of God) moved upon the face of the waters. We live in the day when the Spirit of God is again moving upon the face of the waters to bring to light the meaning of His Word to a dying world.

"And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light day, and the darkness He called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day." Genesis 1:3-5

The Light and the Spirit are the same. Light means life. The Spirit means life. So when God divided the light and darkness, He separated the two and called the light, Day; and the darkness, Night. God knew the light and darkness could not dwell together. God sent His only Son to become the light of the world:

"In Him was life; and the life was the light of men." John 1:4

God's only Son became the life and the light of men. Those who deny His life are in darkness, because they have denied the light of life. When mankind denies the light of life, they are in gross darkness. This is where God showed Isaiah the whole world would be:

"Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." John 8:12

Jesus declared Himself to be the light of the world. Those who follow Him shall not walk in darkness. Those who do not walk as Jesus walked are in darkness. If we walk as Jesus walked, then we have the light of life. But the world has gone its own way, and walk in darkness. Many today who sit in churches walk this same way. No longer does Christ have anything to do with their lives. They show off their opulence with their fancy clothes, their fancy cars, and they walk in the way of the world. The disciple Peter, who was given the keys of the Kingdom, declared:

"We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the Day Star arise in your hearts:" II Peter 1:19

Our `more sure word of prophecy' is that God has a light that shineth in a dark place. This dark place in our lives are the areas we have not turned over to Him completely. When we yield this place to Him, then the Day Star will arise in our hearts, and consume our lives. Paul was a man of God who cried out to God:

"My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you," Galatians 4:19

When Christ is formed in us, then the Day Star will arise in our hearts, and the light of life will become our life. But as Isaiah declared, "That darkness has covered the earth, and gross darkness the people." The prophet Jeremiah addresses this same day in which we live:

"Give glory to the Lord your God, before He cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains, and, while ye look for light, He turn it into the shadow of death, and make it gross darkness." Jeremiah 13:16

Many who truly believe they are searching for God in their lives have stumbled upon the dark mountain. They stumble because the Day Star has not risen in their hearts. God has turned their seeking into the shadow of death. God has given us His grace and mercy so that we may walk, and not stumble. We need to search diligently to find our way, our truth, and our life. The light of the glorious gospel is upon the waters for each of us if we search, come out, and be separated from the gross darkness of the world.

Well, I have gone through another operation. They repaired a torn rotator cuff in the left shoulder. It has been painful and awkward. I am not to move my left shoulder for three weeks. There are many things we depend on our left arm for. But we have stayed busy on the phone and answering e-mails. Many of our friends have called, and we truly appreciate the encouragement. Things are going well in Northern Maine. Our mail list is growing, and we wish to thank all who help support this work God has given us to do. Maybe next month I can use both hands in preparing this letter to the body of Christ.
