Truth or
Tradition
Have you ever asked yourself why you believe what you believe, or do the
things you do? Most of us have been taught things since we were children,
and we have never questioned them, thinking they are right to believe in
and do because our parents did, and their parents did. Trouble is our parents,
like most of us, did not study and research to make sure the things they
allowed were really of God or not. Many things seem right in the eyes of
man but are not pleasing or acceptable to God.
The Truth About
Easter
Easter is called a Christian festival to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus
Christ. It is one of the most important holy days of the Christian religion.
On Easter many people attend church to take part in their religious ceremonies.
Where did the word Easter come
from?
Some believe the word Easter comes from the Teutonic festival celebrating
the return of spring each year, which was called Eostur. Others believe the
word Easter is the Saxon origin for Estra, the goddess of spring. Sacrifices
were offered to her around the Passover each year to celebrate the Vernal
Equinox. By the Eight Century Anglo-Saxons had adopted the name to designate
the celebration of Christ's resurrection. In reality Easter is merely the
slightly changed English spelling of the name of the ancient Assyrian and
Babylonian goddess, Ishtar. The Phoenician name of this goddess was Astarte,
wife of Baal, the sun god. God denounces the worship of this god as the most
abominable of all pagan religions. The word Easter is of pagan origin and
is not Biblically based.
Many will proclaim Easter is mentioned in Acts 12:4. The word Easter in this
Scripture is the Greek word PASCHA, and should have been translated "Passover".
Easter was not observed by the early church. Here is a list of symbols man
associates with Easter: cross, lamb, lights, eggs, rabbits, lilies,
lent, fish, chicks, new clothes, Good Friday, Palm Sunday, Ash Wednesday,
Shrove Tuesday,,Maundy Thursday, Feet Washing, Sunrise Service Holy Week
The Origin of the Sunrise
Service
Long ago in France, people gathered outside to watch for the first sunbeams
of Easter, believing they were God's angels dancing for joy. An old Irish
custom was to hold a dance contest as the sun rose on Easter morning. The
men danced, and women baked a cake to be used as a prize for the winner.
What does the Bible say about sunrise services? God showed Ezekiel what was
an abomination to Him:
"And he brought me into the inner court of the Lord's house, and, behold,
at the door of the temple of the Lord, between the porch and the altar, were
about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of the Lord,
and their faces toward the east; and they worshiped the sun toward the east."
Ezekiel 8:16
In essence, they were worshiping the rising son, or Astare, the wife of the
sun god Baal.
Easter Eggs
Easter eggs are part of the ancient Babylonian mystery rites, and as such,
are pagan. The ancient druids bore an egg as the sacred emblem of their
idolatrous order. Eggs were sacred to many ancient civilizations, forming
an integral part of the religious ceremonies in Egypt and in the Orient.
Eggs are a sign of fertility. Astare in known as the goddess of fertility
or sex. Easter eggs have nothing to do with the resurrection of our Lord
and Saviour.
The Rabbit
In Ancient Egypt, the rabbit symbolized prolific birth and new life. Some
ancient peoples considered it a symbol of the moon. It may later have become
an Easter symbol because the moon determines the date of Easter. Rabbits
are also a symbol of mass production, or superior fertility. Again this comes
from the goddess of fertility.
The Vernal Equinox
When was Jesus crucified, and when was His resurrection? Christians observe
Easter on a Sunday between March 22nd and April 25th. We may ask why Easter
does not come on the same date each year? The answer is simple. Easter has
nothing to do with the death of Jesus or His resurrection. We know, by the
Scriptures, that Jesus was crucified on the Day of Preparation before the
Feast of Passover. Jesus is our Passover Lamb. Passover comes on the fourteenth
day of the first month of the Jewish calendar. The Passover was called a
High Day. In Jewish traditions, there are seven High Days a year. All high
days are Sabbaths, or days of rest. If the High Day fell on the weekly Sabbath,
then Israel would have two Sabbaths in one week. Such was the week Jesus
was crucified. There were two Sabbaths that week: the Sabbath for the High
Day Passover and the weekly Sabbath. Before each Sabbath there was a day
of preparation because no work could be performed on the Sabbath. All meals
were to be prepared in advance. Israel was command-ed not even to ignite
a fire on the Sabbath. Mark recorded this day of preparation.
"And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is
the day before the sabbath," Mark 15:42
Jesus was not killed on Friday, he was killed on Wednesday. His resurrection
was three days later, Saturday night. When the women came with spices on
Sunday morning, he had already risen.
IN CONCLUSION
Easter is the celebration of the Vernal Equinox and the goddess of fertility
Astare. Does it make any difference to God if the Christian celebrates the
world's heathen holidays. God admonished His chosen people Israel:
"Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them (verse 29
speaking of the other nations), after that they be destroyed from before
thee; and that thou inquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations
serve their gods? Even so will I do likewise. Thou shalt not do so unto the
Lord thy God: for every abomination to the Lord, which He hateth, have they
done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt
in the fire to their gods. What thing soever I command you, observe to do
it; thou shalt not add thereto nor diminish from it." *** Deuteronomy 12:30-32

April, 1974 This month in history:
The Xenia tornado took place on April 3, 1974 at 4:40pm. I have original
articles that my Dad saved from the then 2 Dayton newspapers and the photographs
and stories are just unbelievable. On April 4th the morning paper the Journal
Hearald reports 24 dead and 225 injured by the afternoon paper it had risen
to 25 and 555. And this was just the day after. The numbers continued to
rise. The papers list the names of the dead and injured. The devastation
was massive. There was a rash of tornadoes that day that killed over 305
people over several states. It was the worst that had happened in 49 years.
I was almost 14 at the time and lived in the Dayton area. I remember watching
the weather warnings on the tv news and wondering why my Dad was so concerned
about them. We actually heard the twister from our back door. We were many
miles away but could still feel the erie-ness of the situation. I remember
thinking how ferocious the wind sounded, going to look out the back door
and finding the trees still as stones. We heard a noise that sounded very
much like a giant train, time seemed to stand still for the moment. At our
house nothing happened but we new something was going on somewhere. Minutes
later we saw and heard the reports coming in on the devastation. I will never
forget that feeling, I am feeling it again now. I was not even in Xenia.
I can only imagine how it must have been for those people. The stories in
the paper are just heart wrenching. Later that night the sirens sounded and
we were taken from our beds by our parents and down to the basement where
my Dad turned over our couch and put it up against the wall and had us crawl
under it and covered us with the cushions. I had already seen the news reports
that day from the tornado and I was just terrified. We came through it all
just fine like I said we lived in Dayton. But we were sure scared. Every
since then I have a great respect for tornado watches and warnings. Sometimes
they can be a pain. There was not a warning system like the kinds we have
now when the Xenia tornado hit so that might be part of the reason why the
warning systems can seem so annoying now. April is a popular month for tornadoes.
Be careful and heed the warnings when they come this spring.
The Xenia disaster was so devastating that is summoned Ohio Senators Howard
Metzenbaum and Robert Taft. They were shocked and overwhelmed by what they
saw. On April 10th President Richard Nixon came to see it for himself. The
paper shows the President's helicopter flying over the destruction and later
shows him walking and talking with the homeless people of the city.
As you can see it left quite a mark on me. I get a little nervous every time
I hear the word tornado. This might be a interesting history lesson to look
into at the library. The ads and other articles in the Newspapers are fun
to admire for us old folks! And the price of the paper was just one thin
