Isaiah spoke of a day when God's people were to
"Arise shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee," Isaiah 60:1.

This will be in a time when

"Darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people:" Isaiah 60:2.

The Hebrew word for Gross is ARAPEL and is the symbol of ignorance, misery, and sin. This is not the absence of physical light, but the lack of Spiritual enlightenment. We live in a world today when gross darkness, ignorance, misery, and sin are certainly covering the people.

When speaking of this day, Joel declared it to be a day of darkness and of gloominess and of thick darkness, Joel 2:2. This is truly a day of gloominess for the world. As for God's people, Isaiah records,

"The Lord shall arise upon thee and His glory shall be seen upon thee and the Gentiles (aliens from God) shall come to thy light and kings to the brightness of thy rising," Isaiah 60:2-3.

God has spoken of a definite separation between light and darkness. This separation between light and darkness was from the beginning.

"And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." Genesis 1:2

The earth was without form and void. The word form is TOHU and means "confusion, waste, empty, wilderness, and chaotic". The word void is BOHU and means "indistinguishable ruin." It would indicate that the earth, in Genesis 1:2, was not in a created condition; rather in a state of chaotic, indistinguishable ruin.

Many scholars agree that God had judged a prior creation between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2. There is no way to prove a prior creation. The only thing we can be assured of is that something had taken place before the Adam creation in order for the earth to be in this condition.

Moses recorded that darkness was upon the face of the deep. The word deep is TEHOM and means "abyss, also subterranean water supply, or a surging mass..It has the same meaning as the bottomless pit spoken of seven times in the book of Revelation.

At the same time, the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. The word faceas used twice in Genesis 1:2, is the word PANIM and means "face." The face reflects the attitude and sentiments of the one being spoken of. So we recognize the two entities being spoken of as the Spirit of darkness and the Spirit of God, or the Holy Spirit. Then God said,

"Let there be light and there was light. God saw the light that it was good and God divided the light from the darkness." Genesis 1:3-4

The word divided means "to separate." God made a distinct difference between light and darkness. God called the light, day and the darkness He called night, Genesis 1:5. This was on the first day.

Many teach that this was God's way of explaining the literal separation of day from night, by the sun and the moon. But it was not until the fourth (4th) day that God created the sun, moon, and stars, Genesis 1:15-18.

On the fourth day God created the physical luminaries in the heavens to rule over the physical day and night. What God revealed in Genesis 1:2-5 was Spiritual Light and spiritual darkness and He called these Day and Night. The separation between the Spirit of Light and the spirit of darkness was made by God from the beginning.

Many names are given to the Spirit of Light: Comforter, Eternal Spirit, Spirit of Christ, Spirit of Glory, Power of the Highest, Spirit of Life, Spirit of the Father to name a few of the 23 names given to the Holy Spirit.

The spirit of darkness has many names also: accuser, adversary, angel of the bottomless pit, devil, satan, god of this world, prince of the power of the air, murderer, Beelzebub. These are a few of the 28 names attributed to the nature of the spirit of darkness.

As we differentiate between the Spirit of Light and the spirit of darkness, the only interest we should have in the spirit of darkness is to recognize it, the affect it can have on our relationship with the Lord, and how to deal with it in our lives.

Paul writes that we are not to be ignorant of satan's devices, II Corinthians 2:11. Jesus gained the victory over the spirit (power) of darkness on the cross. Paul writes in Colossians:

"Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son:"  Colossians 1:12-13

The victory on the cross was complete.

Jesus spoke, "As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world," John 9:5.

He spake again, saying,

"I am the light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life," John 8:12.

Those who walk in the light that Jesus left shall have the Light of Life. The question arises, "What is life?"

Jesus stated, "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life," John 14:6.

Jesus is the Life. John began his writing by saying,

"In Him was Life and the Life was the Light of men," John 1:4.

As Paul was explaining the Light that was from the beginning, he stated:

"For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ." II Corinthians 4:6

What was this Light that shone in the face of Jesus? It was the Holy Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit is the Life of all men.

John revealed that God is Light and in Him there is no darkness at all, I John 1:5.

As we begin to move in the Spirit of light, we are set free from the works of the spirit of darkness in our lives. Jesus had no darkness in His life upon this earth. As we learn to walk as Christ walked, no darkness will be in our lives.

Paul writes that we are not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what fellowship does righteousness have with unrighteousness. And what communion (fellowship) does light have with darkness? Yet, many Christians spend more time worrying about what satan is going to do in their lives, than what God has planned for their lives.

They fear satan, their defeated enemy, more than they do their victorious, righteous Father. They operate more in the spirit of darkness than they do in the Spirit of Light. These have rejected the Spirit of Life and are operating carnally in the flesh. They are allowing satan to have a smorgasbord in their lives.

When the Spirit of Light is not operating in a person's life the spirit of darkness is ever present. These are not part of the Father's Kingdom.

"Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His," Romans 8:9.

If the Spirit of Light is not resident in a person's life, then darkness will fill that life because darkness is the absence of light.

It is revealed that we are to have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness;  but rather reprove them, Ephesians 5:11. We are to be the light to those who walk in darkness. Paul proclaimed in Romans:

"And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness." Romans 2:19

We are to be the light and guide to those in darkness. Yet, many who proclaim to be walking in the light will walk in darkness, becoming part of that darkness, trying to justify what they are doing by proclaiming, "I am witnessing to them in this situation". It is impossible to draw them to the light by becoming part of their darkness. The only witness they will receive is "the works of darkness prevailed". Truly, it is the blind leading the blind, and they will both fall into the ditch, Matthew 4:14. That ditch is a rut that will lead to more unrighteousness.

Jesus revealed, "The light of the body is the eye," Matthew 6:22.

The Greek word for eye is PHOTENOS. This is where we get our English word photo, or photograph. Just as the eye of the camera captures the image of what it is exposed to, our eyes record the image it is exposed to, in our minds. This is why it is necessary to set a guard on what we allow our eyes to witness. We must eventually deal with everything our eyes are exposed to.

David, the psalmist, wrote, "I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes," Psalms 101:3.

Yet most Christians justify their T.V. They read smut newspapers and magazine articles. Many have not set a guard on the "window of their soul" and they wonder why their walk in God is so difficult.

Job spoke, "I made a covenant with mine eyes, why then should I think upon a maid," Job 31:1.

Job knew that what he kept from entering into his mind, he would not have to deal with later in his life. By choosing not to let the spirit of darkness have place in his life, Job allowed the Spirit of Light to flourish and grow.

Jesus went on to say, "If therefore thine eye be single, the whole body shall be full of light," Matthew 6:22.

The word single indicates "no double-mindedness". As we read in James,

"A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways," James 1:5-8

A double minded man cannot expect to receive anything from the Lord.

When we set the guard on our eyes and mind, and do not allow any of the spirit of darkness to enter in, then the Spirit of Light can have full reign in our lives. We will not have to overcome the things of darkness because we have not allowed darkness in our lives.

Jesus warned, "But if thy eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness," Matthew 6:23.

When we give place to the spirit of darkness, it effects the whole body. It has a devastating affect on our walk in Christ.

We are commanded:

"Come out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean and I will receive you," II Corinthians 6:17.

The word separate means "to set bounds, to determine a limit". Christians need to set bounds in their lives that they will not pass over under any circumstances. If they fail to set these bounds, they have not separated themselves unto Christ and are allowing the unclean to touch their lives. If the unclean touches their lives, they will not be received by the Lord Jesus. God will only accept a separated and purified people; those who have clean hands and a pure heart; who have not lifted up their souls unto vanity, Psalms 24:4.

Their souls are their minds. The word vanity means "worthlessness, or that which does not produce life".

Jesus warned, "If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!" Matthew 6:23.

When we allow the spirit of darkness to replace the Spirit of Light how great is that darkness?

Peter wrote: "For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them," II Peter 2:21.

It would have been better for them to have never known the Spirit of Light, than to have known Him and allow the spirit of darkness to enter in and defile the whole body.

How great is that darkness? The word darkness means "death, or lack of light (life)". In Genesis, darkness did not move; only the Spirit of God moved. Darkness, or death, could not move until it found a willing vessel to move in. That willing vessel was the serpent.

As we begin to understand the fall of man, we begin to understand that neither the serpent, nor the voice (spirit of darkness) that spoke from the serpent, had any power to make Eve do anything. It was only because Eve gave the spirit of darkness place in her life and believed what he said, that man fell.

Adam was given dominion over all the beasts of the earth, the fowls of the air and the fish in the sea. Eve could have commanded the serpent to be gone and it would have fled from her. But because she listened, she gave place to the spirit of darkness.

When the spirit of darkness entered in, the Spirit of Light departed. Adam and Eve found themselves naked. This condition existed in all mankind until Jesus came. Then the way was prepared to overcome the spirit of darkness once and for all. The spirit of darkness now only has control over those who give him place. He only has power if we give it to him. If we resist him, he will flee from us.

"Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,  To give light to them that sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." Luke 1:78-79

The word dayspring is ANATOLO and means "the rising of light, as the sun rising in the east." It was the Spirit of Light that had returned to shine upon all mankind through the person of Jesus Christ. That man, who was sitting in the shadow of death because of sin, could now have the light of life that he may, again, be reconciled to the Father of Light and live. We have been given power over the spirit of darkness to conquer and control his activity. If we do not give him a vessel to use to further his kingdom, his kingdom will be defeated in our lives.

Those who allow satan, the spirit of darkness, to have place in their lives are the children of darkness. Whereas those who have overcome the spirit of darkness are called the saints and Children of Light.

Jesus spoke much about our being the Light.

"Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth." John 12:35-36

While ye have light, believe in the light that ye may be the Children of Light."

If we believe in the Light, then we are the Children of Light; or, Children of the Lightgiver which is the Father of Lights, James 1:17.

Jesus also stated, "I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on Me should not abide in darkness," John 12:46.

Those who are light do not dwell in darkness because light and darkness cannot dwell together. When the light comes, the darkness in our life flees away and we are filled with light. Darkness cannot exist where there is light.

Matthew records: "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Matthew 5:14-16

We are the light in a darkened world. We are to shine as lights, as a city set on a hill or a candlestick on a stand. The darker the world becomes, the more our light should shine.

We are to come out from among them and be separate, II Corinthians 6:17. We are not to partake of the works of darkness. God made the separation in the beginning and we are to determine it in ourselves that light and darkness do not dwell together. If there is darkness in our lives, we should expose it to the light so the darkness will flee away.

In Jesus' Words: "And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God." John 3:19-21

When the light came into the world, men loved the darkness rather than the light. The religious system of Jesus' day knew that He spoke the truth, but they chose their religion instead of the Light. They walked on in their religious customs, being ignorant of God's righteousness and went about to establish their own righteousness, not submitting themselves to the righteousness of God, Romans 10:3. When man's deeds are evil, they hate the Light.

"Every one that doeth evil hateth the light," John 3:20.

When the Light that is in us, exposes the evil that is in them, they will hate us because of the Light.

Jesus said, "If the world hate you, ye know that it hated Me before it hated you," John 15:18.

They hate us because of the Light. But when those who walk in the Light, come to the Light, their deeds are made manifest that they are wrought in God, and their deeds will glorify God, John 3:21.

If our deeds are the works of God, then we have nothing to fear from the Light. The Light will glorify our works before God and man. Truth and Light will always prevail. We were sometimes darkness but now we are Light in the Lord and therefore should walk as Children of Light, Ephesians 5:8.

Today, many who claim they are walking in the Light have not overcome the darkness in their lives. These wonder why they have no peace, joy, or victory in their lives. It is because they have not made the separation between the Light and the darkness. They give place to the spirit of darkness which is a thief and a robber. The spirit of darkness comes only to kill and destroy. But we are to walk as Children of Light. We are admonished by Paul to:

"Awake thou that sleepest and arise from the dead and Christ shall give thee light," Ephesians 5:14.
When speaking of the ten virgins, Jesus stated, "While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept," Matthew 25:5.

It is time to awake and arise from our sleep in death and come to the True Light of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

If the gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost. In whom the god of this world (the spirit of darkness) hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, II Corinthians 4:3-4. Yet, many who call themselves Christian today, have no relationship with the Father, (Holy Spirit), nor have they obtained a knowledge of the gospel of Christ which is the Old and New Testaments. The god of this world has blinded their eyes, and the gospel is hidden from them.

Paul went on to say that, if the spirit of darkness had not blinded their eyes, then the Light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them, II Corinthians 4:4. Those who will not allow themselves to be exposed to the Light still dwell in darkness, and the gospel is hid from them. This is not speaking of the lost, only. It is speaking to those who are still in darkness concerning the gospel.

God has promised His Children of Light that the judgment He is bringing upon the earth will not be hid from them.

"But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night." I Thessalonians 5:1-2

Paul is writing of the coming judgment of God which is coming upon the earth. He related that there was no need to write to the Children of Light concerning the times and the seasons. Why? Because Paul knew that the Children of Light would know the times and the seasons.

After Jesus' resurrection, before He ascended off the earth, the disciples asked the Lord,

"Wilt thou at this time restore again the Kingdom to Israel?" Acts 1:6.

Jesus answered,

"It is not for you to know the times or the seasons which the Father hath put in His own power," Acts 1:7.

Many would stop there and proclaim that we are not to know anything. But Jesus went on and related,

"But ye shall receive power after the Holy Ghost is come upon you," Acts 1:8.

The knowledge of the times and seasons is in the Father's power and those who receive the Holy Ghost have received that power. Therefore, those who have received the Holy Ghost have received the knowledge of the times and the seasons. This is why Paul wrote to the Thessalonians that there was no need to write unto them of the times and season because he knew they had received the power. Paul went on to say:

"You know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night," I Thessalonians 5:2.

Then Paul goes on to explain,

"But ye, brethren, are not in darkness that that day should overtake you as a thief," I Thessalonians 5:4.

That day will be as a thief to overtake those in darkness. The Children of Light will not be surprised because God will have made that day perfectly clear unto them by His Word (Bible) and His voice. Paul reveals,

"Ye are all the Children of Light and the Children of the Day," I Thessalonians 5:5.

We are not of the night, nor of the darkness. The separation that God made in the beginning is evident in His people.

Today, those whose hope is in this world, in this government and this financial system are living in fear and anxiety. Their hearts are failing them for fear and for looking after those things which are coming upon the earth, Luke 21:26. But the Children of Light are rejoicing as they see the promised day of the Lord approaching. Peter wrote that we should be looking for and hastening (earnestly desiring) unto the coming of the day of the Lord wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, II Peter 3:12.

Are we to earnestly desire the judgment God is to bring upon the earth? Our hope is not in this earth.

"Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness," II Peter 3:13.

God has put this hope and vision in His Children of Light. Paul went on to say,

"Therefore let us not sleep as others, but let us walk and be sober (serious-minded)," II Thessalonians 5:6.

Many times we are told to watch and pray. Paul said we are to watch and be serious minded. Yet, many today desire to entertain and be entertained. They will not fellowship with those who are too serious-minded. They would rather eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow they may die. Dying has become their hope of escape.

"For they that sleep, sleep in the night and they that are drunken are drunken in the night," I Thessalonians 5:7.

The word drunken means "intoxicated". To be intoxicated is "being impaired to think or function in a rational manner, unable to make logical conclusions". Drunkenness not only includes the use of alcohol;  but also includes other debilitating substances such as drugs, sniffing glue and other such related actions. These people are dwelling in darkness. Those dwelling in the Light do not need the crutch of alcohol and drugs to get them through this life. We have a better hope! Hallelujah!

"Let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love and for an helmet the hope of salvation. For God hath not appointed us to wrath (judgment) but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ."    I Thessalonians 5:8-9.

The Children of the Light are not appointed to God's judgment which will be brought forth upon the world unawares. Our hope is not in this world or the god of this world. Our hope is in the Light. As Peter stated,

"We have also a more sure word of prophecy, where unto ye do well that ye take heed as unto a light that shineth in a dark place until the Day Star arises in your hearts," II Peter 1:19.

We are to be that Light in a darkened place until the Day Star arises in our hearts. The Day Star is the word PHOSPOROS and means "the light bearer, the light bearing one". We, who have a more sure word of prophecy know that we are to

"Arise, shine for our Light has come," Isaiah 60:1.

The Day Star has risen in our hearts and the glory of the Lord has risen upon us. The spirit of darkness has no place in us. We are to look forward to His glorious appearing in the Saints of Light. Hallelujah!
