Preparing For the Y2K
Crisis

Dear Brothers in Christ,
I know you are busy, but I would ask you to take a few minutes to read this letter. We are not selling anything. This is not a plea for money, nor do I want to speak in your church. This letter is to warn you of a coming disaster you may have already heard of called Y 2 K.
Y = Year 2 = Two K = thousand Y 2 K = The Year Two Thousand
From the 1940's, computers have been programmed with only the last two digits of the year. To save valuable memory space, programmers did not use the 19 in front of the year. For example they used 65 instead of 1965. When the year 2000 comes, computers which have been programmed liked this will think it is the year 1900. If this programming is not corrected, one of three things will happen: they will crash, shutdown, or go haywire. In any case it will cause havoc and chaos. This is referred to as the Millennium Bug. Some have called it the Digital Pearl Harbor. Another described the problem as the most devastating event since Noah's flood. No one knows, nor do they understand the extent of the problem. All they know is it will affect the life of every person on planet earth.
We are part of a global economy. Our finances are tied to every other nation. There are 8000 utilities in the United States. Because our power companies are grided together, if one fails it can cause problems with all the others. Without electric our way of life ceases. The same is true with transportation and communication. Everything is run by computers, from the watch on your arm, the car you drive, and the dial tone on your telephone. There are between 25-40 billion computer chips worldwide that must be checked by the year 2000. This is an impossible task. Experts agree this problem cannot be fixed in time. There are going to be disruptions, and maybe a total shutdown of everything we depend on to maintain our way of life. These experts are talking about a stock market collapse, run on banks, no electricity, no phone service. The trains will no longer run, nor will airplanes fly. Satellites will malfunction. These are only the service problems. I do not want to get into the technical problems. There is much info on the Internet. This has been written up in Newsweek, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times in London, The Economist, and many other publications. Experts agree this becomes a people problem. Technology cannot solve the problem, the government cannot solve the problem. Money cannot solve the problem.
To give you a glimpse of the seriousness of this problem, the Social Security System began working on this problem in 1989. They had 30 million lines of communication that had to be checked. To date they have 10 million of these lines checked. With less then eighteen months to go, there is no way to complete the job. Then to make things worse, they discovered another 30 million lines they did not know they had. Citicorp Bank has 400 million lines to check. They know their best efforts will not be enough. General Motors chairman stated if Y 2 K happened today, GM could not produce one car in their fifty-seven plants world wide.
We have only considered the United States concerning this problem. Japan has the second largest economy in the world. Their finances are in chaos, as are all Asian economies. They have not spent one yen to solve this problem. They are not, nor can they become Y2K compliant. All Europe is using their programmers to convert their computers to handle the change over to the Euro-dollor by January 1, 1999. They have not done one thing to avert the Y 2 K crisis. The same is true with all of South America, Mexico, and Canada. The third world nations have bought our old computers, none of which are Y 2 K compliant. So what do we do as the body of Christ?

1 Make your people aware of the problem
2 Begin to come together. Become one in Christ and purpose
3 Store food, water, heating fuel and other necessities you need to survive a crisisThe question is not is this going to happen. The question has already been answered by the experts. The only question that remains is:
How bad is it going to be? Get prepared for the worst, and pray for the best. Pray, fast, and seek God as never before for your family and the flock God has given you to care for.
