Put Off Filthy
Communication
"But now ye also put off filthy communication out of your mouth. . ." Colossians
3:8
The word filthy means "foul speaking, low and obscene speech." Paul says
we need to put off foul speaking and obscene speech. We live in a time when
foul speaking is an acceptable way to speak. Men, women, and children are
speaking the foul language. It's on the radio and television. It's written
on posters, tee shirts, sweat shirts, and in magazines. It wasn't that long
ago, when someone said something foul, you would look down on that person.
Now we call those who speak clean language as being from the old generation.
There was a time when you were in public, you watched what you spoke. There
was a respect for others.
"Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which
is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers."
Ephesians 4:29
What is proceeding out of your mouth? Are you tearing down or building up?
What are those around you hearing?
"A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that
which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth
forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh."
Luke 6:45
Whatever we put in our heart (good or evil) will come out of our mouth.
"But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall
give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt
be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. Matthew 12:36-37
We all must give an account of our speech in the day of judgment. God hears
every word we speak. By our words we will be justified or condemned. We may
not record what we speak, but God records every word. If you have been speaking
filthy communication, ask God to forgive you, and wipe your slate clean.
Quit speaking foul words and words that tear down others. Begin to speak
with a new tongue, words that edify and bring grace to those that hear.
What Is
Grace?
We should all learn what grace is or what it means. From the American Dictionary
of the English Language we find that grace means, "to adorn, decorate, embelish
and dignify; to dignify or raise by an act of favor, to honor; to supply
with heavenly grace." In most of these definitions, we see the words dignfy
and honor.
The word dignity means "to invest with honor, to exalt in rank, to promote,
to elevate to a high office, to make illustrious, to distinguish by some
excellence or that which gives celebrity.
The word honor means "the esteem due or paid, to be worthy of high estimation,
a testimony of esteem, any expression of respoect, high estimation by words
and actions.
Now that you know a little more about grace, maybe it will help you to understand
grace a little more.
"But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord." Genesis 6:8
If we change grace and put its meaning there, it says Noah found honor and
dignity in God's eyes.
"For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law,
but under grace." Romans 6:14
Again, if we change grace, and insert its meaning, it says we are bound by
honor and dignity to keep our word and let no sin come into our life. I
read this with the understanding that God will give honor and dignity to
those who chose to be with Him in His church. In God we find grace, honor,
and dignity. We should desire that others find grace in us through Christ.
