"The shield of His mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in scarlet: the chariots shall be with flaming torches in the day of His preparation, and the fir trees shall be terribly shaken. The chariots shall rage in the streets, they shall jostle one against another in the broad ways: they shall seem like torches, they shall run like the lightnings." Nahum 2:3-4
Nahum reveals these events will occur in the Day of Preparation. We are living in this Day of Preparation just prior to God's coming wrath when He is going to return to the earth and to His people. We need to consider what Nahum saw. He described the unknown things he saw in the context of his understanding, describing his sightings as chariots with flaming torches, which ran like lightnings, and raged in the streets, and jostled one against another in the broadways. What Nahum saw was our modern form of transportation, the automobile. Nahum had never seen anything move faster than a horse. He described what he saw as chariots that were like flaming torches (from the front the headlights of automobiles and from the rear taillights and the fire from the exhaust).
Nahum tells us these chariots rage in the streets. The word rage is interesting. It means "to praise, to glory, to shine, to boast." It also means"to act as a mad man." What an appropriate description in our day. When a person buys a new car, how they praise and boast about it as the finest, glorious thing every made.
Nahum also says they jostle together in the broadways. Fender benders on freeways and broad streets are common occurrences. This is when men and women act as mad men. Road rage is an ever-increasing problem. It is easy to see why Nahum thought they acted as mad men.
Nahum declared that they ran like lightning. Compare, with the horse, the fact that cars run 60 - 70 miles per hour.
Nahum saw all these things in the Day of Preparation. This time frame speaks of the last seventy years with the invention of the automobile.
Nahum also tells us this will be a time of great shaking of the fir trees. Paul spoke of this time in his letter to the Hebrews:
"Whose voice then shook the earth: but now He hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven." Hebrews 12:26
God has promised a great shaking. This will not only effect the earth (the physical realm) but also heaven (the Spiritual realm). Nahum tells us God is going to shake the fir tree. To understand this, we need to look at some of the attributes of the fir tree.
The fir tree is a pioneer tree. It is one of the first trees to grow after a fire or other disaster. The fir tree is an evergreen. No matter the weather, the situation, or the time of year, the fir tree is always green. Green represents life. The fir tree was used in the building of the tabernacle. It was also used for the boards to make the Holy of Holies which were then covered with gold. Those who are God's fir trees will have their place in the Holy of Holies. These are the fine gold of God which have been tried in the fire. The prophet Hosea informs us:
"Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard him, and observed him: I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found." Hosea 14:8
The fruit of the Spirit will be found in God's evergreen fir trees. I mentioned the fir tree was a pioneer tree which comes up first after a fire or disaster. Isaiah prophesied:
"Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree: and it shall be to the Lord for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off." Isaiah 55:13
Those who are God's pioneer fir trees will receive an everlasting name, but the dry trees who have lost their greenness, or life, will be cut off. Isaiah continues:
"The glory of Lebanon shall come unto thee, the fir tree, the pine tree, and the box together, to beautify the place of My sanctuary; and I will make the place of My feet glorious." Isaiah 60:13
The fir tree will be part of beautifying the place of God's sanctuary. This is where our God will tread forever (in the midst of His people). Hosea declared:
". . . I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found." Hosea 14:8c
Jesus also spoke of the green tree:
"For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?" Luke 23:31
Jesus was the green tree (full of life) when He walked the earth. As Jesus our example, we too are to become the green trees in our day.
Nahum prophesied about the fall of Nineveh in his day. But he was also prophesying concerning the Nineveh of our day, those who are the offspring of ease. Nineveh was the capital of the Assyrian empire. It was a beautiful walled city on the banks of the Tigris River. Sennacherib, who came against Jerusalem, ruled from Nineveh. Let's compare what Nahum prophesied against Nineveh, and compare it to the United States of America today:
"The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite. God is jealous, and the Lord revengeth; the Lord revengeth, and is furious; the Lord will take vegeance on His adversaries, and He reserveth wrath for His enemies." Nahum 1:1-2
First we notice this is the burden, or prophecy, of Nineveh (the offspring of ease). Nahum stated, God is jealous. The word jealous means"demanding exclusive love." The first commandment is: "Thou shalt have no other gods before Me." This nation serves many gods.
One of this nation's gods is the god of ease and pleasure. This concept has been taught by many well-meaning parents in our day who state, "I want my children to have it better than I did." All the things that have made our lives easier have come about in this last seventy year generation. Many have made gods out of those things that have made our life easier. If you do not think so, just shut off the electric for a week. There would be no cooking, no heat, no television, no entertainment of any kind. Shut off the telephone, the radio, the internet; and all communication with the outside world would be gone. If there was no electric, we could not pump gas which means there would be no travel and no shopping except locally. And of course, trucks could not deliver food because there would be no fuel for the trucks. All the gods of ease that man has put before their God makes Him jealous.
"For thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:" Exodus 34:14
One of the many names of God is Jealous. As Nahum informs us, God is furious (hot rage, wrathful, displeasure) and is going to take revenge on all the gods of ease and pleasure. God reserves His wrath for His adversaries, and we have His assurance:
"The Lord is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the Lord hath His way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet." Nahum 1:3
God is slow to anger and is longsuffering to us. He is waiting for His people to get ready for His Kingdom Age. He is great in power. He is all powerful to do as He wishes. He will not acquit the wicked. The word acquit means "to find guiltless." God will judge those who know His way, but refuse to walk it.
God has His way in the whirlwind. The hurricane seasons in the past few years have been some of the worst ever recorded. The tornadoes we have seen also testify to the fact that God has His way in the whirlwind. God is, indeed, having His way on a godless, sinful nation. We need to ask, "What will this next hurricane season bring?"
"He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth." Nahum 1:4
The word rebuketh in this Scripture means "to make roar." Truly, we have seen the seas roar with the devastating Tsunami which hit on December 26, 2004. The same thing happened on the United States southern coast line with Hurricane Katrina and other devastating hurricanes.
God has also dried up the rivers. There have been great droughts in the west and floods in the east. The year 2011 has brought great droughts and fires all over the south.
"The mountains quake at Him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at His presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein." Nahum 1:5
What is God talking about when He says the mountains quake and the hills melt? This is the destructive force of volcanoes. We are witnessing more volcanic activity than ever before. Volcanoes which have been inactive for centuries are coming alive again.
The earth is burned at His presence. The word burned in this verse is very interesting. It is the Hebrew word NASA and means "to lift up." This verse should then read, "the earth is lifted up at His presence." There have been many great earthquakes which cause the earth to lift up and reveal large cracks in the earth. These are all judgments of God upon a sinful land at ease.
When God's presence is lifted up in our midst, then all the world will know who our God is - - - that He is the true and living God, not some dead prophet as the Moslems worship. But all will know God's mighty power in that day. Then will our God inhabit all eternity with His elect whom He has chosen from the foundation of the earth.
Then Nahum asks: "Who can stand before His indignation? And who can abide in the fierceness of His anger? His fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by Him." Nahum 1:6
Who can stand before God's indignation (anger, rage, and wrath)? Who can abide in the fierceness of His anger? God gave the prophet Malachi the answer to this question:
"But who may abide the day of His coming? And who shall stand when He appeareth? For he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:" Malachi 3:2
This was also a question. The answer, of course, is only those who have been purified by the refining fire of God and washed by the fuller's soap and by the water of the Word will be able to stand in that day. Jesus asked this same question to John on the Isle of Patmos:
"For the great day of His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?" Revelation 6:17
Again, only those who have been put through the refiner's fire and washed with the water of the Word will be able to stand. God spoke to Moses concerning the time when God is going to pour out His wrath on all ungodliness:
"If I whet My glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me." Deuteronomy 32:41
God's glittering sword is His sword of judgment. We cannot deny what God has spoken through all these recent tornadoes, tsuanmis, hurricanes, earthquakes, and fires in the west and the deep south. We cannot deny the time frame we live in. God's fury is being poured out like fire. Fire devours everything before it. Nothing will be able to withstand the fire of God. He is the refiner. Everything that comes in contact with His fire will either be purified or destroyed. Nahum continues:
"The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and He knoweth them that trust in Him." Nahum 1:7
God knows all those who are going to trust in Him in the Day of Trouble. Will you be able to stand when God pours out His judgment as fire upon the earth?
Nahum tells us God poured out His fury LIKE fire! The word like means "AS " fire. This not only describes destruction by fire, but also anything that destroys everything in its path. We have witnessed this with the recent hurricanes, earthquakes, the tsunami, mud slides in California and Oregon, the floods in Nevada, droughts in the west, and floods in the east. Who then can say we are not living in the day of God's judgment? His fury is being poured out like fire in a manifold of ways. As Nahum declared:
"The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble: and He knoweth them that trust in Him." Nahum 1:7
The Lord is our stronghold, our place of protection in the time of troubles that are coming upon us. "And that time of trouble is here!" As Nahum says, God knows those who trust in Him. Having faith in God is our only hope. In Paul's letter to Timothy, he gives us assurance:
"Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are His. And, let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity." II Timothy 2:19
God knows those who are His. He gives us sound direction. "Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity." The word iniquity means "unrighteousness of heart and life," "violating the law or the Word of God."
"But with an overrunning flood He will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue His enemies." Nahum 1:8
This is not only a flood of water, as one might think, but it can also be as Jesus declared to John on the Isle of Patmos:
"And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to His throne. And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days. And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child. And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood. And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth." Revelation 12:5-6, & 13-16
So we discover this overrunning flood can be a spiritual flood which will carry away all those who are at ease. Nahum tells us in verse 3 that God is going to make an utter end of the place thereof (complete destruction). He says the same thing about Mystery Babylon when nothing will be left. God warns His people:
"And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, My people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues." Revelation 18:4
"Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her." Revelation 18:8
God is warning His people to come out of the midst of Babylon (the United States). [See "Mystery Babylon" by George Kirkpatrick]
Nahum repeats this in the next verse:
"What do ye imagine against the Lord? He will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time." Nahum 1:9
God will make an utter end. There will be total destruction. Affliction shall not rise up the second time? The word affliction means "trouble, distress, adversity, tribulation." These things will not rise up again, because God is not going to turn His Kingdom over to men who do not know His ways.
Then God speaks to Nahum about those who will not be part of God's Kingdom:
"And the Lord hath given a commandment concerning thee, that no more of thy name be sown: out of the house of thy gods will I cut off the graven image and the molten image: I will make thy grave; for thou art vile." Nahum 1:14
Those who are vile in the Lord's eyes will not be around when His judgment ends. Their names will be sown no more. Who carries on our name? It is our children. Those who are at ease will be cut off, along with their children.
Their graven images will also be cut off. Their graven images are those things made out of wood that God's people have made gods out of. This could be houses, boats, airplanes, sports equipment, etc. etc. etc. All these things will be cut off.
Also their molten images will be cut off. The molten images are those things made out of metal that God's people have made gods out of. This could be automobiles, sports cars, household appliances, etc. etc. etc. Those who live in ease will surely be cut off in the grave. God declares these are vile.
Nahum continues to foretell concerning the Nineveh of our day:
"Woe to the bloody city! It is all full of lies and robbery; the prey departeth not;" Nahum 3:1
Woe to the bloody city! The United States of America has become a bloody city, full of lies. Lying has become the normal way of life in this "ease crazed" society. This nation is full of robbers. Jails and prisons cannot be built fast enough to house this corruption. Now judges let felons stay at home with an ankle belt so they can be monitored at all times. Crime is rampant. There are more murders, rapes, robberies than ever before. Government officials think nothing of lying. One of this nation's most beloved presidents said "Lying is just a part of politics."
"Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are women: the gates of thy land shall be set wide open unto thine enemies: the fire shall devour thy bars." Nahum 3:13
Men have become as women. Men no longer take their God-given position. The women run their husbands, the finances, the children and the home.
The gates of the land are wide open to our enemies with our borders undefended and terror groups in our cities. Truly what God spoke to Nahum is exactly what God spoke to Moses:
"But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the rock of his salvation." Deuteronomy 32:15
If God was not speaking about the United States, He was speaking of a nation exactly like the United States. The United States has grown fat and has forsaken God and lightly esteemed the Rock of their salvation.
"They provoked Him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations provoked they Him to anger. They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to the new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not. Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful and hast forgotten God that formed thee.
And when the Lord saw it, He abhorred them, because of the provoking of His sons, and of His daughters. And He said, I will hide My face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith.
They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked Me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.
For a fire is kindled in Mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.
I will heap mischiefs upon them; I will spend Mine arrows upon them. They shall be burnt with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust.
The sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also with the man of gray hairs." Deuteronomy 32:16-25
The fire of God has devoured the gates and the bars which surround our nation. Our gates are wide open to our enemies. Truly Nineveh, the offspring of ease, can be compared to the United States of America.
The little book of Nahum should be a comfort to all those who live in our day and walk with their God in true holiness and separation from all things that defile.
