An Open Letter To The Body of Christ: Biblical Global Warming
One of the most controversial subjects today is global warming. The question on everyone's mind is, "Is the earth warming up?" There are experts on both sides of this issue, but for us to understand global warming, we must go back a long way in history - - - back to the flood as recorded in the book of Genesis. We know the rain came down for forty days and forty nights.
"And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered." Genesis 7:19-20
The highest mountain was covered in water twenty-seven feet above its apex. Did you ever ask yourself, "What happened to the water?" Some of the waters could have filled the underground aquifers. But what happened to the rest of the water. It could not have all evaporated. Something happened to the earth in Noah's time.
Today the earth sits twenty-three and one-half degrees off center from true North. This means the earth shifted on its axis, so when you read a compass, true North is twenty-three and one-half degrees off where the compass points as North.
So, let's consider the shifting of the earth. When God shifted the earth, it threw the waters at the time of Noah to the poles, and it froze instantly.
Science has found saber tooth tigers and mammoths frozen in the ice at the poles. These were frozen instantly. These animals were standing up with daisies and green grass in their mouths and stomachs. How did this happen? It had to happen at the time of the great flood, because it was the only time that much fresh water was on the earth.
Scientists tell us the earth at one time was all the same temperature. They have found fossil rocks with imprints of tropical plants embedded in them at the poles. This proves the poles of the earth were at one time a tropical paradise.
The weight of the ice holds the earth at twenty-three and one-half degrees off true North. No one can argue that these ice caps are melting. In fact ice all over the world is disappearing. In the Arctic, the ice flows and rivers are melting much earlier each summer. Polar bears are drowning because they have no ice flows to rest on during their hunts. So all evidence points to the gradual increase in the earth's temperature.
Scientists inform us if the earth temperatures rise by even one or two degrees, the earth's ice would melt at such an alarming rate that every coastal city around the world would flood. The oceans would fill every low coastal area.
We now hear about islands, which are only a few feet above sea level, being flooded. This causes farm lands to be covered with salt water, preventing the growth of crops. The islands' water supplies are being threatened. If the ocean waters rise a few more inches, these islands would become uninhabitable. Every island in the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans are threatened with rising waters.
There are theories as to why the earth's temperature is rising. The most popular theory is that carbon dioxide gases, produced by the burning of fossil fuels, without a doubt adds to the problem. But this is not the main cause. If the earth continues to heat up at its present rate, in just a very few years as many as two hundred million people would be displaced by drought or rising sea levels.
So what will happen when the ice caps melt? The Bible gives us a very clear picture as to what will happen. The prophet Isaiah makes it very clear:
"The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly. The earth shall reel to and from like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth." Isaiah 24:19-21
When the ice caps melt, and their weight becomes less and less, so it can no longer hold the earth in its present position, the earth will reel to and fro. This means it will wobble on its axis until it again comes to an upright position where North will be the `True North'. This uprightening of the earth will cause many events to take place all at once. In order to know what will happen, we must look to the Word of God. Jesus informed Paul at the opening of the sixth seal:
"And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places." Revelation 6:14
Every island and mountain will be moved out of their places. An island is a mountain with water around it. When the islands and the mountains are moved, it only means the waters have moved. Then the mountains will become islands, and the islands will no longer have water around them. When the earth comes to its upright position, all the waters on earth will be moved, or displaced.
Another thing that will happen is that every fault line will move, causing great earthquakes around the globe. Again, Jesus gave John this insight:
"And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty and earthquake, and so great. And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found." Revelation 16:18 & 20
These events will happen concurrently. Is it any wonder Jesus stated:
"And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken." Luke 21:25-26
Now we come to the real cause of global warming. The prophet Amos tells us plainly why we are having global warming. Amos explains God's judgment upon the whole earth:
"And the Lord of hosts is He that toucheth the land, and it shall melt, and all that dwell therein shall mourn: and it shall rise up wholly like a flood; and shall be drowned, as by the flood of Egypt." Amos 9:5
It is the Lord who is going to touch the land and cause it to melt. What is God speaking of here? He is speaking of the ice on the land. Amos explains, the people shall mourn and lament, and it (the melting ice) will rise up wholly like a flood. And those who are mourning and lamenting shall be drowned by the flood. Amos continues to proclaim God's judgment:
"It is He that buildeth His stories in the heaven, and hath founded His troop in the earth; He that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The Lord is His name." Amos 9:6
It is God who is going to call for the waters of the sea to be poured out upon the face of the whole earth. It is God's judgment hand that will be upon the whole earth. God is going to judge sin wherever He finds it. Those who will not bend their knees to God will suffer His judgment. Amos tells us when this will happen:
"In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up His ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old:" Amos 9:11
The Tabernacle of David was a tent David raised up to house the Ark of the Covenant he was returning to Jerusalem, after it had been taken by the Philistines. At this time the Ark of the Covenant was no longer behind the veil. All the people who wanted to praise and worship the Lord had access to it. Luke, who wrote the book of Acts, explains when God is going to raise up the Tabernacle of David:
"And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written, After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up: that the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom My name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things." Acts 15:15-17
Luke spoke of Amos' prophesy. He declares only the residue of the people will seek after the Lord. The word residue means "remnant or remaining." It will only be those who are left after God's judgment is poured out that will seek after the Lord. Amos continues His revelation of global warming:
"Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills will melt." Amos 9:13
Amos is speaking about the time when farmers have neglected to let the land rest. God informed ancient Israel they were to let the land rest every seventh year. But because the farmers are so indebted, they must plant the fields every year. So, before one crop is harvested, another crop is planted. A good example of this is `No Till Agriculture'.
Amos tells us the hills will melt. What are the hills that are going to melt? It is the ice glaciers that are melting at an alarming rate.
Amos reveals another wonderful promise of God:
"And I will bring again the captivity of My people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them." Amos 9:14
The phrase bring again means "to turn back." When God's judgment is complete, God is going to free His people from debt, government, religion, and everything else that has held them in captivity. God has promised His elect will again build and inhabit the waste cities. They will plant vineyards and gardens, and once again enjoy the labor of their hands. Amos continues to reveal God's plan for His people:
"And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the Lord thy God." Amos 9:15
What land has God promised to give His people? It is the whole earth. What God has promised, He will fulfill! The sons of Korah also prophesied the earth being melted:
"The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: He uttered His voice, the earth melted." Psalm 46:6
Today, the heathen are raging, trying to figure out how to stop global warming. But there is only one thing that will stop global warming, and that is when the people turn their hearts back to God. But this will not happen. Everyone wants to quote II Chronicles 7:14, but when we take a closer look at this Scripture, we see God's judgment is assured:
"If My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." II Chronicles 7:14
The only people on earth who are called by His name are Christians. It is only when God's people, (Christians) humble themselves and pray and seek His face that God will forgive their sin, and heal their land.
But there is one other thing this Scripture says God's people must do to have their land healed, and that is to turn from their wicked way. Only then will God reverse the effects of global warming.
When God utters His voice, and the temperatures begin to raise at an alarming rate, then the ice will turn to water, and devastation will reign. Nothing will reverse this until people repent and turn from their wicked ways.
An unknown Psalmist also speaks of global warming:
"The hills melted like wax at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth." Psalm 97:5
When the Lord comes with His judgment, then the hills (ice caps) will melt at the presence of the Lord. This is when God's judgment hand will be upon the earth. Amos declared it is the Lord that touches the land and causes the flooding. Another unknown Psalmist declares God's judgment:
"Before the Lord: for He cometh, for He cometh to judge the earth: He shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with His truth." Psalm 96:13
God will judge the world and its people with righteousness. But His people, He will judge with truth. The apostle John reveals this truth:
"Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy Word is truth." John 17:17
If the world wants to stop global warming, they cannot do it with wind mills or solar panels or by harnessing the waves. The only thing that will stop global warming is a changed heart of the people, but this is not likely to happen.
