Tender Mercies Crown

by Kelly Elliott

You redeemed my life from destruction
And placed upon my head a crown,
A crown of tender mercy
In loving kindness I was bound.

But Your crown of tender mercy
Was not always what I did expect.
At times I feel its painful pricks
As it pierces my fleshly defects.

Why must You make me miserable
In the course of making me good?
Why can't You just perform that task?
It would spare me grief if You would.

But Your ways are not my ways,
And Your thoughts past finding out.
For a relationship that is built on trust
Is what You are bringing about.

It doesn't take much faith or trust
When in all my life is well.
It's in my darkest times of life
That I reach beyond the veil.

Tender is this crown of mercy
If in You I come to dwell.
Borne in pain or worn in joy,
I pray I wear it well.
