Paul wrote two letters to the church at Corinth. Paul had apostled this church. Corinth was known for its splendor, and was one of the most prominent trade capitals in Greece. With all this, Corinth was also one of Greece's most corrupt cities, and this corruption had crept into the church.

In Paul's letters to the Corinthian church, he addressed the problem of sexual immorality, misuse of the Spiritual gifts, adultery, carnality, and many other problems in the church. The Corinthian church had become very proud and lifted up in their Spirituality. Paul planned a trip to visit the church at Corinth. He wrote of his coming:

"But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will, and will know, not the speech of them which are puffed up, but the power." I Corinthians 4:19

Paul was not interested in the speech of those who were puffed up. Paul was coming to Corinth to witness their power. Corinth is a picture of the United States of America. America is known for its rich way of life. Like Corinth, it is one of the trade centers of the world. Americans enjoy all the modern conveniences: two cars, many televisions, VCR's, satellite dishes, tape players, CD's, automatic washers and dryers, boats, airplanes, computers; all the toys of this life. Yet America is corrupt to the core. Homosexuals march in our streets, hold public office, teach in our schools, and yes, stand in our pulpits, and wear the military uniform of our nation. America kills their unborn by the millions. The government supports immoral, perverted, and lewd forms of art. The waste and greed allowed by our crooked politicians is a disgrace throughout the whole earth.

Americans have become immoral. Living together outside marriage has become the accepted practice. Alcohol and drug abuse are rampant. Assisted suicides have been approved by the courts. Euthanasia has already been approved to be used on the old. Our youth have become moral degenerates, killing for the thrill of killing. Incest in the home is a common occurrence. The list of godlessness is endless.

This moral degeneracy has found its place in the pews of American churches. The church will stand up and justify their actions, proclaiming, "We live in the twentieth century. The Bible is an antiquated book with no relevance for today". The prophet Jeremiah prophesied of this moral debauchery in the church:

"Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit.
Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not;
And come and stand before Me in this house, which is called by My name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations?
Is this house, which is called by My name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the Lord." Jeremiah 7:8-11

The church has become worldly, sensual, and powerless. It corrupts the Word and the ways of God. It has become a system of programs and committees.

Paul said he did not want to hear the words of those who were puffed up, or operating in their own self-importance. He was coming to see their power. What would Paul think today if he visited the church. Would he see its power? What does the Lord Jesus think when He visits the church? What does He think when He listens to His Word being watered down and modernized? His life-giving, life-changing Word has been altered to maintain the status quo. Pastors spout their man-made doctrines, their own ideas, and their own self-interests. God's ways have been forgotten because many pastors set up and maintain their own kingdoms, refusing the Kingdom of God.

As we begin to search out the power Paul was looking for in the church at Corinth, it becomes very clear God's power has been eliminated in the church. Where there is power, man's mind will be illuminated. When man's mind has been illuminated with the anointed Word of God, he can no longer be a part of the deadness of the church system.

Today, multitudes are leaving the church system. The problem arises: "Where are these to go? Where is the power of God?" Those who are searching for God's power will find it where He put it. God's power is found in His Word and in the prayer closet. We have been given God's assurance:

"And ye shall seek Me, and find Me, when ye shall search for Me with all your heart." Jeremiah 29:13

As we search for the power of God in His Word, there are two Greek words translated POWER: DUNAMIS and EXOUSIA. These words are used interchangeably. The word dunamis is translated "power, mighty works, and miracles". We get the English word dynamite from the Greek word dunamis. The Greek word DUNAMIS means "moral power and excellence of soul; power residing in a thing by virtue of its power for performing miracles".

The second word translated POWER is the Greek word EXOUSIA and was translated sixty-nine times as power. It was also translated twenty-nine times as authority. The Greek word EXOUSIA means "power of choice; liberty of doing as one pleases; the power of rule or government". Authority is the power given to act in our own behalf and on the behalf of others.

As we understand these two words, it becomes clear that authority without the power to act is worthless, and the power to act without authority is worthless. We must consider these words together if we are to have God's power and authority operating in our midst.

The Greek words DUNAMIS and EXOUSIA are used separately and together in God's Word. An example of this was when Jesus dealt with the demon in the synagogue in Capernaum:

"And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! For with authority and power He commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out." Luke 4:36

Jesus obtained both power and authority in His life. Jesus had God's authority in His life, and He had the power to execute His authority. One without the other is ineffective. When the people witnessed the power and authority used together they were all amazed. It is no different today. When people witness those who have obtained God's authority and power to act in a given situation, they stand amazed. But all too often, the glory is given to the man instead of to the one who gave the authority and power to act.

As we study God's Word, we realize how the power God gave unto the church has diminished. Deliverance is not even mentioned, let alone performed. The people are taught to accept this demonic activity in their life as being normal.

In reality they are taught two things concerning satan:

1. The demonic realm is non-existent
2. Satan's power is equal to, or greater than our God's, and we have no power over the demonic realm.

"The devil made me do these things" is accepted as gospel. We need to come to the realization the church does not serve a powerless God. He only seems powerless because He is not allowed to operate in the dead church system. Jesus proclaimed:

"And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power (EXOUSIA) is given unto Me in heaven and in earth." Matthew 28:18

Jesus was given all power and authority in heaven and earth. Heaven is the Spiritual realm and earth is the flesh realm. Understanding this one Scripture we need to ask, "Where does satan have any power or authority in our lives?" The answer should be "None!".

The question arises, "Where do we get the power and authority to resist the devil so he has no place in our lives?" The power in our lives is the anointing of the Holy Spirit. It is only by and through the power of the Holy Spirit anointing that we have the moral power in our lives to become like Jesus our example. He is our example of overcoming, not only overcoming the spirit of darkness, but also overcoming the flesh. Jesus received the anointing of the Holy Spirit on the banks of the Jordan River. After Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River, Mark records:

"...immediately the Spirit driveth Him into the wilderness." Mark 1:12

For forty days and forty nights, Jesus fasted and prayed. During this time satan was given free access to Jesus' life to tempt Him with all fleshly desires: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. When Jesus flesh was in its weakest condition, Jesus resisted every temptation. Satan had nothing in his power Jesus desired. Therefore satan had no power in Jesus' life. When the church arrives in this place, satan will have no power nor control in their midst. Luke continues:

"And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of Him through all the region round about." Luke 4:14

Jesus returned in the DUNAMIS of the Spirit. He had the overcoming power dwelling upon Him. He was endued with the power of God to operate in the Spiritual realm for the remainder of His earthly ministry. Peter proclaimed to all who would hear:

"How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with Him." Acts 10:38

Jesus was anointed with the Holy Ghost and with power. As we search for the power of God, we look to Paul's epistle to the Corinthians. Paul revealed God's power in our lives to the church:

"But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God." I Corinthians 1:24

Christ is the power and wisdom of God. As we search for understanding of the word CHRIST, we discover it is the Greek word CHRISTOS and means "anointed". Jesus was the Christ, (the anointed). Those who are God's anointed in the earth today are His Christs (His anointed ones). When Jesus became the anointed of the Father on the banks of the Jordan, the anointing came in the form of a dove. The Father declared,

"...This is My beloved Son in whom I am well-pleased," Matthew 3:17.

This was the first time the Father declared Jesus to be His only begotten Son. The second time was on the Mount of Transfiguration. Jesus not only became the Christ on the banks of the Jordan, He was declared to be the Son of God. Paul wrote to the church at Rome:

"For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren." Romans 8:29

Jesus was the firstborn of many brethren. His brothers are those God foreknew, and predestined who will be conformed into the image of His Son. The beloved John recorded Jesus' words concerning His Sons:

"But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name." John 1:12

As many as receive Him, He gave the power (EXOUSIA) to become the sons of God. Today many are claiming to be the Sons of God. This proclamation is based on their initial salvation, it is not based on their anointing. These have not been conformed into the image of God's Son, nor do they desire to be. They do their religious thing, and hope it's acceptable in the Beloved. Paul declared Christ was the power of God. How do we begin operating in this power? To operate in God's power we must understand how we get the power. Luke recorded Jesus words to His disciples after His resurrection:

"And, behold, I send the promise of My Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high." Luke 24:49

Jesus gave His disciples instructions to tarry in Jerusalem. Jerusalem represents the true place of worship in our lives. Those who tarried in Jerusalem were empowered from on high. Those who remain in God's true place of worship will also be empowered from on high. When we receive the promised anointing of power, we are endued with the fruits and gifts of the Spirit. In his letter to the Galatians, Paul revealed nine fruits of the Spirit to us:

Love          Longsuffering        Faith               Joy                Gentleness           Meekness
Peace       Goodness            Temperance

The New Testament reveals three additional fruits of the Spirit:
Lowliness                            Patience                                Righteousness

These fruit reside in our lives because the Spirit of God is on our lives. When we come into the true anointing, the fruit of the Spirit becomes evident in our lives. As a tree produces fruit, so will our lives produce fruit by whatever spirit is in our life. If the spirit of darkness dwells in our lives, then we will walk in darkness. Paul admonished the church at Corinth:

"For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light." Ephesians 5:8

When the Spirit of God comes upon us and endues us with His power from on high, then we become children of light. We need to walk as children of light. The fruit of the Spirit is the power of change in our lives. This power of change will bring us again into the image and likeness of our Creator. Paul revealed this truth in his second letter to the church at Corinth:

"But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord." II Corinthians 3:18

The power of God is changing us from glory to glory. The image we behold in the glass is the life of Christ. As we behold this image or vision of Christ and allow the anointing to manifest itself in our lives, we will be changed into His image and likeness.

Paul also revealed the gifts of the Spirit to the church at Corinth:

"Now concerning Spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant." I Corinthians 12:1

Paul wanted all who read his epistles to understand God's Spiritual gifts. Yet most who read the Bible are still ignorant of these Spiritual gifts. When most think of the gifts, their thinking begins and ends with speaking in tongues. We hear many proclaim, "We need to be baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues." Nowhere does God's Word proclaim that speaking in tongues is the evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Paul did not proclaim to the church at Corinth, "I am coming to see if you speak in tongues". He said, "I am coming to know the power". Speaking in tongues is one of the gifts of the Spirit, not the evidence of the Spirit. The evidence of the Spirit is the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. When the fruit is evident, then we will operate in the gifts. Paul revealed:

"But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal." I Corinthians 12:7

The word manifestation means "to make known, or to reveal". When the anointing is in our lives, the Spirit will always manifest itself: first through the fruit it has produced in our lives; and secondly, by the operation of the gifts in our lives. These gifts are to be a profit to all.

The word profit means "to bring Spiritual increase". One use of the word profit is "to bring together, or to bear together". All too often the gift of speaking in tongues has brought division and separation. This is because God's people remain ignorant as to why speaking in tongues was given, and its proper use in the body. As we view the gifts of the Spirit through Spiritual eyes, we understand the gifts were given as tools to minister with. The gifts are to be used to admonish, to lift up, to comfort, and to make known the mysteries of God. Paul listed twelve gifts of the Spirit in the twelfth chapter of I Corinthians:

1.Word of Wisdom
2.Word of Knowledge
3.Faith
4.Gifts of Healing
5.Working of Miracles
6.Prophesy
7.Discerning of Spirits
8.Kinds of Tongues
9.Interpretation of Tongues
10. Gifts unto Men
11. Helps
12. Governments

Gift 1        The Word of Wisdom

The first gift God has given to minister to His body is the Word of Wisdom. The word wisdom means "knowledge of things human and divine". God gives the Gift of the Word of Wisdom to reveal His mysteries hidden in His Word. We know by Paul's letter to the Corinthians, Christ (The Anointing) is the power and wisdom of God, I Corinthians 1:24. No one can come into divine wisdom or operate in the Word of Wisdom without the anointing of the Holy Spirit. James informs us:

"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." James 1:5

God desires all to operate in wisdom in things natural and Spiritual. Paul wrote to the church at Rome:

"Because that, when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools," Romans 1:21-22

Those who are supposed to know God, but do not glorify Him as God in every aspect of their lives have become fools. They profess themselves to be wise, or have wisdom, but their way of life proves they have been deceived.

Gift 2        The Word of Knowledge

The Word of Knowledge is used in many churches as "Prophecy". The Word of Knowledge reveals secrets concerning situations that can only be revealed through the Spirit. When someone gives a Word of Knowledge, he or she is not a prophet; instead they are operating in the Gift of the Word of Knowledge.

Gift 3         Faith

Faith is not only a gift of the Spirit, it is also a fruit of the Spirit. Without the anointing, the power of God in our life, it is impossible to have faith. Without the anointing most look at faith as something intangible. The writer of Hebrews informs us:

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Hebrews 11:1

The word substance means "confidence". When we have confidence that God will perform the things we hoped for, then we are operating in the Gift of Faith, because the fruit of faith is in our lives. The word evidence means "things which are proved or tested". Faith is operating in what we have proved or tested. This is when we have applied God's Word to our lives. Paul proclaimed:

"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God." Romans 10:17

Faith can come only after we have proved the Word of God in our lives. Then, and only then, can we begin to operate our lives by His Word. The writer of Hebrews made it plain where we stand with God concerning faith:

"Without faith it is impossible to please Him..." Hebrews 11:6

Without the fruit and the Gift of Faith operating in our lives through the anointing, it is impossible to be pleasing in the sight of God.

Gift 4           Gifts of Healing

The Gift of Healing is ministered through the power of God. Luke recorded an incident in Jesus' life:

"And it came to pass on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them." Luke 5:17

The word for power here is the Greek word DUNAMIS. It is by the dunamis of God that Jesus was able to heal all who were sick. The question arises, "Why are people no longer healed in the church?" Paul gave the reason in his second letter to Timothy. Paul reveals the condition of today's church:

"Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away." II Timothy 3:5

Those who are still operating in their old form religion have denied the power (dunamis) of God. The power to heal is not welcome in their midst. They have their own way, and God has no place. Paul admonished, "From such turn away". The phrase turn away means "to shun or avoid". Paul warns God's people not to become part of those who deny the gifts; and if you are a part of such groups, to get away, to shun, or avoid them. We should search for life where the power of God is given free reign in people's lives.

Gift 5           The Gift of Working of Miracles

The next gift is the Gift of Working of Miracles. The word miracles is the Greek word DUNAMIS. Dunamis was translated seventy-seven (77) times as power. It was translated seven (7) times as miracles. As we search out God's glorious gifts of the Spirit, we discover God has abundantly endued us with the power to do the work He has set before us. The word working means "to have the operation of the power of God present in our midst". The power of change must become evident in our midst. This change is the changing of the mind. We will not change until our thinking changes. Paul inspired the church at Rome:

"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God." Romans 12:2

When we are transformed by the renewing of our mind, we come into the perfect will of God. This can only come by the working of miracles, or the power of God's anointing.

Gift 6           The Gift of Prophecy

When we think of prophecy we think of the prophets of old who stood before Kings and foretold future events. The Old Testament is made up of the law and the prophets. Luke recorded Jesus' words when he proclaimed:

"The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the Kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it." Luke 16:16

John was the last of the Old Testament prophets. Since the time of John, the Kingdom of God has been preached. What message are the prophets of today to proclaim? When Jesus declared the judgment He would bring upon the earth at the end of the age, He revealed to His disciples:

"But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things." Mark 13:23

Today's prophets are to reveal the mysteries of the Kingdom hidden in the law and the prophets, or the Old Testament. Many believe the Old Testament is not needed in our modern times. They feel it is antiquated and not applicable to today's way of life. The Apostle Paul was not of this mind. When he stood before the governor of the land, he proclaimed:

"But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets." Acts 24:14

Paul believed all things written in the Old Testament. Paul was a scholar of the law and the prophets. He knew all things revealed unto him by God were verified by the Old Testament writings. When he stood before King Agrippa, he again expounded:

"Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come." Acts 26:22

Everything Paul spoke or wrote could be verified by the Old Testament. Today when the power of God speaks through one of His anointed vessels, every word they speak should be checked against the Word of God. Paul disclosed:

"Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge." I Corinthians 14:29

One of the meanings of the word judge is to "discern". When a prophet brings forth a word, we need to discern every word by going to God's Word and judging what has been spoken. When the Gift of Prophecy is being exercised in our midst we need to discern by the Spirit and by God's Word before we receive what has been spoken.

Gift 7            The Gift of Discerning of Spirits

The Gift of Discerning of Spirits is a special gift God has set in His body. The word discerning means "to distinguish the spirits". We are admonished by John:

"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world." I John 4:1

We are to "try" the spirits. The word try means "to prove or discern the spirits". God has given us the Gift of Discerning of Spirits, so we may distinguish between the Spirit of God and the spirit of darkness. John continued:

"We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the Spirit of truth, and the spirit of error." I John 4:6

The spirit of error has brought much confusion into the body of Christ. It has not been dealt with because the Gift of Discerning of Spirits is not operational in the church. In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul stated:

"Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

The spirit in the world is contrary to the Spirit of God. We must be taught by The Spirit of God. We must compare spiritual things with spiritual. All Scripture is given by the inspiration or Spirit of God. We must line up everything we hear, see, or think with God's Spiritual Word. God has given us the Gift of Discerning of Spirits to keep us from error. If we refuse to exercise this gift in our lives, we will fall into error, and away from God.

Gifts 8 & 9         The Gift of Kinds of Tongues, and The Gift of Interpretation of Tongues

The KJV calls this "diverse kinds of tongues". The word diverse is in italics, and was added to the text. The original text reads, "kinds of tongues". The word tongues is the Greek word GLOSSA and means "languages of nations". The word kinds means "offspring, nation, or race". Tongues is not an unintelligible utterance. The phrase unknown tongues appears six times in Paul's letter to the Corinthians. Every place it appears the word unknown is in italics, and does not appear in the original text. Paul was dealing with the error in the church at Corinth. When Paul writes of "kinds of tongues" he is speaking of "known languages".

When a message comes forth in tongues, it will be in a known language. The speaker may not know or understand the language he is speaking. This is why the Gift of Interpretation of Tongues is so important. The first use of the word tongues in the New Testament was on the Day of Pentecost:

"They were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." Acts 2:4

The word other means "another". The word utterance means "to speak forth". Those in the Upper Room spoke forth with another tongue as the Spirit gave them utterance. As we study what happened on the Day of Pentecost, it becomes clear God used the one hundred and twenty in the Upper Room as vessels to spread His good news through the whole earth. Luke recorded:

"And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language." Acts 2:5-6

God's Word records, "Now, when this was noised abroad the multitude came together." This was not a spontaneous happening, it took time for this event to be noised or spread about abroad; an hour, four hours, or all day, perhaps it was the next day. The time period does not matter, what is important, is that when this multitude assembled they heard every word in their own language.

"...they were all amazed and marveled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galileans?
And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?" Acts 2:7-8

The one hundred and twenty were not speaking some unintelligible language. Those that heard all heard in their own language. If the one hundred and twenty were all speaking a different language this would have been mass confusion. Paul wrote to the church at Corinth:

"For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints." I Corinthians 14:33

As we begin to understand the Gift of Kinds of Tongues, we know when this gift is operational, God can use our mouth to speak to any person in any language. We need to know we are only vessels our Father can operate through. When we give Him control of our tongue, He can use us to speak directly, or He can use the Gift of Interpretation through another. Paul asked the question:

"Have all the gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?" I Corinthians 12:30

Since Paul asked this question, the obvious answer is, "No, all do not operate in the gifts of healing, tongues, or interpretation of tongues." Yet many churches insist all must speak in tongues to be part of their congregation. These need to seek God for the understanding of the use of the gifts.

Gift 10         Gifts Unto Men

Paul continued his explanation of the gifts God set in the church:

"And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healing, helps, governments, diversities of tongues." I Corinthians 12:28

Paul revealed more gifts God set in His church. Paul mentioned the Gifts unto men: apostles, prophets, and teachers. Paul adds two more to this list in his letter to the Ephesians:

"Wherefore He saith, when He ascended up on high, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;" Ephesians 4:8 & 11

These are the gifts of the Spirit God gave to the church. God gave power so the church could be healthy, whole, and move in the things of God. Today these gifts are not recognized in the organized church. They have been replaced by committees, boards, and trustees. The church no longer operates by God's order, but by man's order. There is a constant power play to see who runs the church, if it be the pastor or those who are elected or appointed by the congregation.

When the church begins to operate by God's order and in His gifts, then the power of God will return to the church. As long as man is in control, the church will remain weak, and the life of God will not be evident. Why did God give these gifts to the church?

"For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:  Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:" Ephesians 4:12-13

God gave His gifts for the perfecting of the saints, to grow up and mature the body of Christ. He gave His gifts to do the work of the ministry. This includes the healing ministry, the deliverance ministry, and the bringing forth of God's hidden mysteries from His Word. He gave His gifts to edify the body of Christ, to lift up, encourage, and admonish when necessary.

How long are these gifts given? Until the body of Christ comes into the unity of the faith. Faith is singular. Paul had already stated to the church at Ephesus:

"One Lord, one faith, one baptism," Ephesians 4:5

There is one faith. Yet the common question asked is, "What faith are you?" We do not have a choice, there is only one faith. When this question is asked, the people are trying to find out what denomination you belong to. Denominations are not faiths. They are man-made orders that separate the body of Christ. God only has one faith, and that is in Jesus Christ, and Him crucified, raised the third day. He returned as the Holy Spirit anointing on the Day of Pentecost. This He did to prepare His body for His glorious return, and to set up His Kingdom. When He returns He will rule and reign with His elect for one thousand years.

God's gifts are given until we all come into the knowledge of the son of God. To come into the same knowledge that Jesus, the Son of God, obtained we must put on the headship of Christ. The anointing must be given free and full reign in our lives.

God's gifts to men were given until we come unto a perfect man (the body of Christ). We must become complete, whole, and mature. When the body comes into this place, then, and only then will Christ set His head on His body.

God's gifts were given until we come to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. Paul listed this as the fourth reason for giving His gifts to the church. Christ is not returning for a bunch of milk-fed babies. He is coming back for a body that has matured in the things of God, made fit, and ready to rule and reign in His Kingdom. Paul gave a promise to the church at Ephesus if they allowed the gifts to do their work in their midst:

"That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;" Ephesians 4:14

Today the church is being tossed to and fro by every doctrine that comes along. The word sleight means "deception". Deception is running rampant in the body of Christ. Every false and beguiling doctrine known to man is present in the church: new age, the identity movement, universal and ultimate reconciliation, the rapture, once saved-always saved; the list of damnable heresies is endless. Why has this happened? Because the church has failed to utilize God's gifts in their presence.

Gift 11         The Gift of Helps

Paul goes on to list the Gift of Helps. This is one of the most neglected gifts in the body of Christ today. Many have said, "I do not have a ministry". The Gift of Helps is a true ministry before God. It simply means "to aid another in the time of need". The Gift of Helps can be accomplished in the Spirit through prayer, or in the physical through physical labor, monetary means, or just being a friend in time of need. Those who operate in the Gift of Helps are led of God as to who they are to help, and how they are to help. Those who have the Gift of Helps are generally those who spend much time seeking God on how they can minister before Him. Jesus spoke of those who operate in the Gift of Helps:

"For I was an hungered, and ye gave Me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave Me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took Me in: Naked, and ye clothed Me: I was sick, and ye visited Me: I was in prison, and ye came unto Me." Matthew 25:35-36

All the above list are under the Gift of Helps. When the righteous asked the king, "When did we do these things for you?", the King answered:

"...Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these My brethren, ye have done it unto Me." Matthew 25:40

When we operate in the Gift of Helps, we are doing it unto the Lord. Nothing we do for God goes unnoticed.

Gift 12           The Gift of Government

God has set His Gift of Government in the church.

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace." Isaiah 9:6

God's government rests upon the shoulders of His body. This is the eldership He has set in His body. The elders are God's ordained overseers of the church. Even though most churches are run by the pastor, a deacon board, a pastoral committee, or by the congregation, this is not the Gift of Government God has set in His church.

God's government is upon His shoulders. The shoulders are the closest to the head. The shoulders are where the burdens of the body are carried. The arms are attached to the shoulders. The arms are the strength of the body. The hands are attached to the arms. The hands do the work of the ministry.

God has given His ordained elders the Gift of Government. Those who operate in this special gift in the body are called and empowered by God to be the overseers in His Body.

When speaking of God's leadership in the church, the Scriptures always refer to elders, plural, as being more than one. The church has only one head, and that is Christ Jesus. When the church has man as its head, it will never accomplish what God has ordained in the church.

God has ordained the church to be operated by eldership with co-equal authority. The Gift of Government is to be used to lift up and mature the body of Christ. The writer of Hebrews speaks of those God has given the Gift of Government:

"Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the Word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation." Hebrews 13:7

Those God has given the Gift of Government to are also ordained to speak His Word. These are to be examples of faith or the power of God to the flock. The Hebrew writer stated, "...considering the end of their conversation...". The word conversation means "their way or manner of life". What does this mean? Peter disclosed this when speaking of the elders:

"Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock." I Peter 5:3

God's elders are not to lord over the flock. They are to be examples of faith, righteousness, and true holiness. Too many times those who have set themselves up as shepherds of God's flock have failed, leaving mistrust and confusion in the wake of their sin. The writer of Hebrews continues:

"Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you." Hebrews 13:17

Those who operate in the Gift of Government are to watch for the souls of those God has put in their charge. The people are to submit to the ones God has made overseers in His body. This does not mean everyone who stands in the pulpit, or has a position in the church has been placed there by God. The people are to examine their leaders way of life. Do they live by the Word? Do they speak and show forth a life of faith? Or do they go by the old adage, "Do as I say, and not as I do? In his letter to Timothy, Paul declared:

"Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine." I Timothy 5:17

Who are the elders who deserve double honor? It is those who rule well, lifting up, and encouraging the body of Christ, and who labor in the word and doctrine of Christ. Those God has ordained to operate in His power and authority need to be respected as God's oracles and gifts. In his letter to the church at Rome, Paul proclaimed:

"For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance." Romans 11:29

The gifts God has set in the church are eternal callings. Those whom God has ordained with the Gift of Government are not only His chosen leaders in this age, these will be leaders in the age to come. These will rule and reign with Him for the one thousand millennial age.

The Workings of the Power of God

To understand the workings of the power of God in our life. It becomes necessary to look at our example Jesus Christ. As was stated before, Jesus was given all power (EXOUSIA) in heaven and in earth. Jesus appeared to His disciples as they were eating, and admonished them in their belief. Then He gave them the assurance:

"And these signs shall follow them that believe; In My name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues: They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." Mark 16:17-18

These are signs that will follow those who operate in the power of God. Jesus stated, "In My name they shall cast out devils". Deliverance was a huge part of Jesus' ministry. Yet today deliverance in most churches is not even spoken of, let alone practiced. By Jesus' words, deliverance is a sign we should look for among believers.

By Jesus' words we must assume if there are no deliverances we are dwelling among non-believers. On the other hand we know those who have made deliverance their whole ministry. There is no balance in their ministry. Many have been maimed for life Spiritually by these who mishandle the Word of God. Deliverance should be an important part of the ministry, but not the whole ministry. When Jesus proclaimed His ministry, He quoted the prophet Isaiah:

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord." Luke 4:18-19

Jesus' ministry was well-rounded. All He did, He did by the anointing He received on the banks of the Jordan. Jesus came to preach the gospel to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance, to set free those who were held captive by the spirit of darkness, to heal man's physical and spiritual blindness, to set at liberty those who were bruised or had been wounded (generally by word of mouth), and lastly to preach the acceptable year of the Lord, "The Day of His Judgment". Jesus set the captives free wherever He went.

When Philip asked Jesus to show him the Father, Jesus asked Philip, "Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known Me," John 14:8-9. Then Jesus disclosed the source of His power:

"Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak unto you I speak not of Myself: but the Father that dwelleth in Me, He doeth the works." John 14:10

The works Jesus did in His flesh were done by the anointing that came upon Him after His water baptism. In the book of Acts, Luke recorded:

"How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with Him." Acts 10:38

When the anointing came upon Jesus, He went forth in power. He utilized this power in everything He did, every word He spoke, and every move He made.

Today there are many deliverance ministries. But there can be no deliverance without the power (dunamis) anointing in our life. If we are going to do the work of the ministry, we must know where our power and authority come from. John came to Jesus and declared:

"...Master, we saw one casting out devils in Thy name, and He followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us." Mark 9:38

Here we see a non-believer using the name of Jesus to cast out devils. This reveals our authority to operate in the ministry of deliverance is in the name of Jesus. Different times when Jesus was doing deliverances, the demon would speak and say, "We know who You are," Luke 4:34. Jesus also revealed the power we need to set the captives free. Jesus declared:

"But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God is come unto you." Matthew 12:28

We have the authority in the name of Jesus. We have the power by the anointing. When we operate by the authority and power, then the spirit of darkness must obey. This power and authority was not resident in Jesus only. When Jesus sent forth His disciples to do the work of the ministry...

". . .He called His twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases." Luke 9:1

Jesus gave His disciples power (dunamis) and authority (exousia) over all devils. The disciples not only had power over all devils, they had power to cure diseases. How far the church has fallen! The church is full of those who are sick, and held captive by the spirit of darkness. When the church learns to operate in God's "exousia" and "dunamis", no power of darkness can prevail in their midst. Jesus gave His disciples the assurance:

"Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you." Luke 10:19

This same promise is made to the church today, but the church has failed to allow the Spirit of power to work in their presence. They have their planned programs and their printed bulletins. The Holy Spirit would only interrupt their well-organized service.

Jesus knew the power and authority He set in the church. He also knew that when the church begins to operate in this power and authority nothing in the satanic realm would be able to touch them. When Jesus asked His disciples who they thought He was, Peter answered, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God."

"And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but My Father which is in heaven." Matthew 16:17

The revelation of who Jesus is can only be revealed by the anointing. Jesus then made a promise:

"And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." Matthew 16:18

The church is to be built upon the words of Peter, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God". Jesus was Christ, the Anointed One, and He is the Son of God. The church needs to operate in the Christ anointing, knowing who Jesus, the Son of God, is in their midst. His life must become the church's pattern. When the church comes into this place the gates of hell will not prevail against the church. Today the gates of hell are prevailing against the church because God's power and authority have not been given place in the church.

Jesus anointed and sent forth seventy of His followers in pairs. They were to go to every city to heal the sick and set the captives free. When the seventy returned they proclaimed, "Even the devils are subject unto us through Thy name," Luke 10:17.

"And He said unto them, I beheld satan as lightning fall from heaven." Luke 10:18

Heaven is the Spiritual realm. When we cast satan out of our Spiritual realm, he will no longer confuse and torment the body of Christ. The prophet Isaiah declared:

". . .dust shall be the serpent's meat." Isaiah 65:25

Dust is the old, Adamic, carnal nature. As long as we operate in the dust nature, satan and his kingdom will have something to chew on. It is only through the power and authority in God's anointing that we can cast satan out of our Spiritual realm. Then, and only then, will we tread the serpents under our feet. This displays the overcoming power of God in our lives. In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul declared:

"And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and power:" I Corinthians 2:4

When Paul spoke, he spoke and demonstrated the Spirit and power of God in His life. What is wrong with the church? The people are still being taught with enticing words that produce no power, no Spirit, and no life. This will not produce the needed change in people's lives to prepare them for the Kingdom of God. God is going to raise up His shepherds who will do the work of the ministry. The prophet Jeremiah prophesied of this day:

"And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them: and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be lacking, saith the Lord." Jeremiah 23:4

God's people will not be lacking when they begin to operate in God's power and authority. His power will be released in those who allow the Anointing to change them into the image of the Son. As Paul declared:

"That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. I Corinthians 2:5
